Meet The Manager

Jemma Bowden is Manager at Coppelia House.

Hello, I’m Jemma, Registered Manager at Coppelia House.

I’ve worked for Peninsula Care Homes for over 10 years, including many years at our sister home, Plymbridge House. I began working in care at 15 and have progressed from care assistant to Registered Manager. The people and families I’ve supported along the way have shaped how I approach care.

For me, it’s often the little things that matter most: a familiar face, time to listen and remembering how someone likes things done. I want residents to feel at home, maintain the relationships they cherish and continue enjoying what matters to them.

One experience especially close to my heart was helping a couple move into Coppelia together, so they could carry on sharing everyday life.

I know choosing a care home can feel overwhelming. When you visit, I hope you feel comfortable asking questions, sharing worries and telling us about your loved one.

You’re always welcome to come and meet us.

Stepping into Coppelia House feels very much like walking into someone's home. Set in the heart of the Devon market town of Moretonhampstead, this traditional country house is full of character and has been caring for people for over 100 years.

With room for up to 30 residents, Coppelia has a friendly, relaxed atmosphere where people can get to know one another and feel part of the home. Over the years, we've made improvements to the building to provide comfortable, accessible accommodation while preserving its original charm.

We provide residential and dementia care, supporting people with their individual needs while encouraging them to remain as independent as possible.

We take time to get to know each resident, their interests, routines and the things that make them feel at home. Whether someone enjoys company and conversation, joining in with activities or simply spending time in a favourite quiet spot, we want life at Coppelia to feel familiar and enjoyable.

Our Rich Life approach is about more than meeting care needs. It's about knowing each person, respecting their choices and helping them continue enjoying the relationships, interests and everyday experiences that make life meaningful.

Coppelia House is part of Peninsula Care Homes, an independent, family-owned group of five care homes across Devon. Established in 2002 and wholly family-owned since 2005, we believe that every home should have its own character while sharing the same commitment to thoughtful, personalised care.

Our Rich Life approach is about more than meeting care needs. It's about knowing each person, respecting their choices and helping them continue enjoying the relationships, interests and everyday experiences that make life meaningful.

Across Peninsula Care Homes, we believe every voice matters, every choice matters and every day matters.

Family and friends are always welcome, and we'd love you to come and visit, meet our team and experience the character of Coppelia for yourself.

Our Building and Facilities

Coppelia House has all the charm and character of a traditional Devon country house, with comfortable rooms, lovely views and beautiful, well-established gardens.

The light-filled main lounge is at the heart of the home, with windows overlooking the gardens on both sides and French doors opening directly outside. It's a favourite place for residents to spend time together, enjoy our tradition of sherry before Sunday lunch or welcome visitors to our monthly open-house coffee mornings.

Our established gardens provide a peaceful setting for enjoying the outdoors, while the terrace is a lovely spot for reading the newspaper, chatting with friends and family or enjoying a meal outside when the weather allows.

Inside, our dining room offers a welcoming space for sociable mealtimes, with home-cooked food prepared by our chefs.

Throughout the house, there's a variety of rooms and spaces to enjoy, many overlooking the gardens. We've made improvements over the years to support residents' comfort and accessibility while retaining the building's original character. Two passenger lifts provide access between floors.

Activities Are So Important

There's plenty happening at Coppelia House, but we know that everyone has their own interests and ways of enjoying the day.

Our activities team organises a varied programme of clubs, activities and events, with opportunities to be creative, enjoy music, share memories or simply spend time together. Our lounges, dining room and gardens provide welcoming spaces for getting together.

One of the pleasures of living at Coppelia is being part of Moretonhampstead. With the town on our doorstep, residents enjoy walks to the local pub, popping out for an ice cream or visiting the greengrocer to choose some fresh fruit. We also enjoy taking part in local traditions and celebrations, including the annual carnival and the town's flag festival. Some residents attend a local memory group, providing another opportunity to meet people and maintain connections beyond the home.

But life at Coppelia isn't just about organised activities. We take time to get to know each resident, their interests, routines and the things that matter to them. Whether that's enjoying a favourite hobby, chatting with friends, reading the newspaper on the terrace or joining one of our regular gatherings, we want everyone to have opportunities to enjoy life in their own way.

There's always room for a quieter day too, with residents choosing how much or how little they'd like to join in.
