Victor Zingoni

Cedars Care Home is a modern, purpose-built residential care home in the historic seaside town of Southend-on-Sea.

The home offers exceptional long-term and respite care for the elderly, and those living with dementia-related conditions. We pride ourselves on ensuring the highest possible quality of life for all our residents, providing professional care with empathy, compassion and a focus on dignity.

In May 2019 CQC rated us as 'good' overall and 'outstanding' in the 'responsive' category, reflecting our flexible approach to residents’ individual choice and continuity of care.

Cedars accommodates 48 residents over three floors in bright, spacious, comfortable and well-furnished rooms.

In this well-designed and welcoming home, residents can maintain their independence while enjoying the peace of mind that comes with knowing that their personal care needs are being met by an experienced and dedicated team.

Cedars isn’t just a place where you receive top-quality care. Our wellbeing managers organise a varied programme of creative, musical or fitness activities and days out. And, for therapeutic ‘me time’, a dedicated hair salon provides on-site hair and beauty facilities. Our menus are varied and nutritious and we strive to create a comfortable home-from-home environment with a strong family feel.

Residents' views are important to us, and we take these into account in the day-to-day running of the home.

Cedars Care Home offers accommodation for 48 residents in bright, spacious, comfortably furnished rooms with en-suite or wet room facilities, many with attractive views over the garden.

Accommodation is spread over three floors and where possible, we will offer you your choice of room. Each is equipped with TV and telephone points, a nurse call system and an adjustable automatic bed to ensure maximum comfort. We also encourage residents to bring with them favourite pictures and photographs, treasured ornaments and small items of furniture.

Cedars has a lovely light and airy feel, with homely communal areas, lounges and dining rooms on each floor where you can socialise with guests or participate in our programme of daily activities.

There is lift access between the floors, and all areas are wheelchair accessible, as is our large, private garden. This is a pleasant space where residents can enjoy an al fresco meal with fellow residents or guests in the summer.

As well as our on-site hairdresser, we also offer other paid-for services such as chiropody.

The home manager is supported 24/7 by a multi-disciplinary team of nurses, carers, domestic, catering and admin staff, who all receive regular in-house training from our training manager.

We have good staff ratios to ensure the highest level of care is given to our residents from a professional team. Many of our carers are also qualified to, or working towards, NVQ or Diploma Levels 2 and 3 in Health and Social Care. If staff wish to pursue more advanced qualifications in care and leadership, we offer them every support.

The staff who care for residents with dementia have more specialist training and an in-depth understanding of how dementia affects health and behaviour. Dementia affects everyone differently, so our team provides individual and person-centred care. We have found that our innovative approach to caring for those experiencing dementia has been effective in lessening the anxiety that's often associated with it. This, together with safe and compassionate care, helps our residents to experience greater quality of life.

Every member of our staff and management teams considers themselves to be one of your extended family members.

The Importance Of Meal Times

Maintaining an adequate level of nutrition and hydration is vitally important for elderly people. Equally, enjoying healthy, appetising and visually appealing food is a big part of feeling happy and content.

All meals are home cooked in our kitchens from fresh ingredients by our chefs and their catering team. There is plenty of variety and menus change each day.

Lunch is usually the main meal of the day and you will be given the menu in advance. If none of the day’s choices appeal you can request something else. Your evening meal is usually something lighter but, again, you will have three choices such as sandwiches, soup, or a hot meal. By special request, you can save your main meal for the evening rather than lunch.

Hot and cold drinks, fruit juices and smoothies are available during the day whenever you feel like them, and you will usually find home-made cakes on offer, too.

We are very happy to cater for special dietary requirements. If you need a puréed diet, for example, or have food allergies or intolerances, these will be noted in your personal care plan and shared with our catering and care teams who will ensure that your diet matches your requirements.

Our catering teams are just as much part of the family as you are, so they will enjoy getting to know you and your food likes and dislikes.

We encourage residents who can to eat in the dining room with others. Sharing a meal together is an important part of family life. But if you prefer, you can have any meals brought to you in your room. So, if you like breakfast in bed or a late night snack, it is totally up to you!

Activities Are So Important

We have an active social life in our home with plenty of opportunities to make new friends and participate in a variety of interesting activities, as well as day trips out in the Cedars minibus.

This is important because an active life can help to keep you more alert, mobile and happier, with better health and wellbeing overall.

Our activities co-ordinators organise activities and entertainments such as arts and crafts, music and exercise twice a day, every day. If you have a particular hobby, we can also support you in pursuing it.

At times you may wish to read, watch TV or listen to the radio in the peace and quiet of your own room – and that's ok too!
