Meet The Manager

Donna Barks is Home Manager at Tunbridge Wells Care Centre.

Donna came to Tunbridge Wells Care Centre in early 2022 as a manager fresh from another home near Maidstone, where she was deputy manager before progressing to home manager in 2020. She is an experienced carer and nurse who spent three years working on the acute surgical ward at Tunbridge Wells Hospital, as well as in community hospitals and several care homes in Kent and Devon where she oversaw the care of people with advanced dementia. In 2022 Donna won the Women Achieving Greatness in Social Care Awards’ Rising Star trophy in recognition of her exceptional service. Donna loves Tunbridge Wells and is delighted to be managing the home, which is so close to the centre of town.

Donna Barks

Tunbridge Wells Care Centre is situated in a pleasant residential area of Royal Tunbridge Wells and provides person-centred nursing, dementia and palliative care, alongside all the facilities needed for maximum comfort.

From the moment you enter the chandelier-lit reception with its bright, double-height atrium, you get a clear sense of the quality and welcoming atmosphere residents and families can expect. A genuine culture of kindness, respect and consideration sets the tone, helping residents feel truly at home whatever level of care they require.

The home accommodates up to 70 residents in bright, spacious ensuite bedrooms across three floors, all accessible via lift. Every area of the home—including the landscaped garden—is fully wheelchair friendly.

Nursing and care staff are available 24/7 on each floor, supported by dedicated teams covering housekeeping, administration, facilities, activities and catering. Each floor also has a comfortable lounge with TVs, books and games, offering both cosy spaces to relax and larger areas for group activities. The on-site hair salon is a popular spot for residents to enjoy regular treatments.

Outside, the large landscaped garden provides a peaceful space to socialise, take part in outdoor activities or simply watch the home’s resident ducks enjoying their day.

Activities Are So Important

We have an active social life in our home with plenty of opportunities to make new friends and participate in a variety of interesting activities and day trips.

This is important because an active life can help to keep you more alert, mobile and happier, with better health and wellbeing overall.

Our activities co-ordinators create a monthly programme of activities ranging from entertainments such as visiting singers and film matinees, to painting and crafts, baking, gardening, quizzes and yoga. If your preferred hobby isn’t on the list, we can help you to continue with it. Even if you find moving about difficult, it is still important to get as much exercise as possible, so we also organise gentle exercise sessions, to help keep you mobile.

Family and friends are welcome to join in with activities, and we also organise special events (like our annual summer fête, for example) to which we invite your family, friends and local community groups. If you like to get out and about, we can arrange for someone to go shopping with you and the activities team also arranges group trips and meals out.

Or it might be that you simply want to read, watch TV or listen to the radio in the quiet of your own room. Or someone to sit with you and read the paper, talk about things that are important to you, or help you keep in touch with your loved ones via post, email or Skype. Whatever you prefer, the choice is yours. Many of our residents love animals, and have enjoyed having pets in the past, so we have regular visits from friendly dogs, and some of our residents’ visitors are able to bring their own dogs with them.
