Activities Are So Important

Supporting our residents to enjoy every day living at Withens Nursing Home is a key focus for our dedicated team.

By getting to know each person, we are able to tailor our activities and events to their likes and dislikes as well as activities they may like to try.

No two days are the same here and, alongside our usual daily hobby-based activities, we also like to host events which are a little out of the ordinary.

In addition to keeping fit with chair-based exercises, there are floor games such as skittles and balloon tennis, quizzes, movie afternoons, and art therapy. We also take great pleasure in welcoming entertainers and groups to our home.

Our residents also love relaxing with hand and foot massages and, for those individuals who are nursed in bed, having one-to-one activities with our team. We also look forward to getting dressed up for our themed days throughout the year — complete with themed menus and decorations!

RCH Care Homes – Guidance on Pets and Pet Therapy

RCH Care Homes recognises the valuable role pets and animal-assisted therapy (AAT) can play in enhancing the wellbeing of residents. With a compassionate, person-centred approach, the policy supports both the presence of personal pets and the therapeutic use of animals in the home environment.

Residents may bring their own pets, subject to a suitability assessment by the Home Manager. This ensures the welfare of all residents, staff, and animals is safeguarded. Where appropriate, pets can be included in care plans, with residents responsible for their upkeep. Staff may support pet care when it forms part of an individual’s care needs. Insurance, hygiene, and safety protocols are clearly outlined, and pets are typically kept in residents’ rooms unless otherwise agreed.

The homes also embrace Animal Assisted Therapy, involving visits from trained animals to promote emotional, physical, and cognitive wellbeing. AAT has been shown to reduce loneliness, anxiety, and blood pressure while improving communication, attention, and motivation. This therapy complements dementia care in particular, often unlocking long-term memory and fostering connection.

By embracing pets and therapy animals, RCH Care Homes creates a warm, homely environment that respects individual preferences and enhances quality of life through meaningful, therapeutic experiences.
