Meet The Manager

Gemma Ridout-Bowden is General Manager at Abbotswood Court.

I have been working in care for 22 years and have held a range of positions from Support Worker / Carer to Registered Manager. I have worked in both learning disabilities and elderly care, including dementia care and palliative care.
Before joining the team at Abbotswood, I was Deputy Manager in a medium-sized care home in Northampton caring for the elderly for just over five years. Before that, I worked with adults with learning disabilities and complex needs as Senior Support Worker, and worked my way up to become Registered Manager, a post I held for just over five years. I love the satisfaction of making a positive difference, however great or small, in the life of someone less able than I am, whatever stage of life they have reached.

Established in October 2015, Abbotswood Court is a purpose-built care home that offers 63 spacious en-suite rooms and a wide range of recreational facilities, coupled with expert 24-hour care for elderly people. It is part of the Cinnamon Care Collection, an exclusive group of luxury care homes and retirement villages throughout the country, dedicated to great design and outstanding care.

Abbotswood Court is set in its own beautifully landscaped gardens, within a pretty conservation area on the edge of the historic market town of Romsey in Hampshire. Romsey combines historic charm with modern convenience; its medieval streets lined with Tudor buildings, which cluster around the town’s magnificent Norman Abbey, also offer a variety of shops, markets and coffee shops. Southampton and Winchester are both close by.

Our aim is to help older people live happier, healthier, more fulfilled lives and give peace of mind to their families who entrust us with their care. We are determined to be the difference in senior care.

There are airy communal spaces on all three floors of our home and two lifts big enough to accommodate wheelchairs.

Catch up with guests or fellow residents for a tasty treat in one of our nine comfortable lounges, three on each floor, or enjoy a glass of wine and sample our delicious menu of seasonal, home-cooked food in our sociable dining area. If you enjoy pottering around in the kitchen, you can maintain your skills by cooking up something delicious for yourself or your visitors in our lifestyle kitchens, with support if you need it.

There’s a hairdressing salon if you feel like being pampered, a Willow Hobbies Room dedicated to enjoyable activities. Outside, there’s a dedicated garden area where green-fingered residents can pursue their passion for horticulture

Description

Every person is special and unique. It follows that every person has slightly different needs. At Abbotswood Court we offer non-residential day care, short-term respite care, residential care, nursing care and specialised dementia care.

We are determined to be the difference in senior care, both in the luxurious quality of our home and the outstanding care we provide.

It’s all about you. Our personalised care plans are shaped around the needs of each individual we look after – everything from the meals you enjoy to the hobbies you love and your personal routines.

Whether you need simple support with daily activities such as mobility, washing or dressing, or more complex round-the-clock care, our compassionate team are always on hand to assist you, and offer reassurance and advice to family members.

Our friendly team of carers are equipped with new technology which allows them to update daily care records instantly, so they can devote more time to getting to know residents’ personalities, preferences and concerns, as well listening and responding to your or your loved one’s needs.

If your loved one has a diagnosis of dementia, at Abbotswood Court we offer a special environment, in-depth knowledge, expert care and carefully chosen activities. These include a ‘magic table’ (Touvertafel) that stimulates physical and cognitive activity through interactive games, and encourages social interaction in people who have dementia, creating treasured moments with family members and carers.

In fact, every single aspect of our dementia care is designed to preserve the security, dignity and independence of people living with dementia, and make their lives more joyful and fulfilling.

At Abbotswood Court, we like to think we offer something special that illustrates the difference between good care and great care. But don’t just take our word for it. Discover the difference for yourself – come and visit Abbotswood Court today. We’d love to meet you.

I was proud to be runner-up in the National Registered Managers category of the National Care Awards in 2015, and Local Hero Award for Outstanding Achievement in Care run by the Salisbury Journal and Spire FM. I look forward to seeing Abbotswood Court continue to grow, and support residents and my colleagues.

When I am not at work I enjoy spending time with my family and my horses.

My job involves helping people make difficult decisions about residential care, introducing them to our fabulous team and helping them to understand and experience the superb lifestyle residents enjoy at Abbotswood Court.

I love to see our residents thrive in such a safe, caring and stimulating environment. I enjoy guiding our new residents and their family members through this life changing move with lots of help, continuing support and encouragement.

My career history has centred around customer service, marketing and events. I spent many years working for a local newspaper and more recently within a private hospital.

I live nearby with my family and have a fondness for Romsey and the surrounding area. I enjoy walking my Cavalier King Charles Spaniel ‘Alfie’ when I’m not running around after my two children.

Deputy Manager

As Deputy Manager I work closely with Lea as part of the management team. I regularly meet with our residents’ families and, as part of our ongoing support for residents, their families and friends network.

Since completing my Masters degree in Person Centered Care in Dementia, I have had 15 years’ experience of supporting people living with dementia across a range of age groups.

I joined Abbotswood Court in 2016 and I strive to educate people, particularly families of those living with dementia, to recognise the positive impact of focussing on the abilities the person still has, rather than dwelling on the abilities they have lost. I am passionate about everyone being treated as an individual, continuing to develop the atmosphere of person-centred care at Abbotswood Court and encouraging my Care Team to achieve the best possible care.

I started working at Abbotswood Court in June 2016 and I’m part of a team who deal with the financial side, HR and Reception. I greatly enjoy it, especially the interaction with the lovely residents and their families.

I spent 20 years as the Accounts Manager, based in London, for a group of hotels across the UK and Europe. I went on to run my own coffee shop before meeting my husband and having children.

I then took a position as Estate Manager for a large Estate that had been privately owned for over 300 years by a titled family, managing 40 estate properties and assisting the farm manager who ran a 1,900 acre arable, livestock and dairy farm together with a farm shop, a retreat centre and a family activity farm in Dorset. I did this for eight years before leaving to join my husband in his retirement but I am afraid I got bored – hence my position now at Abbbotswood Court.

The Importance Of Meal Times

We wouldn’t call our food restaurant standard because we aim for something more personal. At Cinnamon we believe in delicious, home-cooked food, attentive service and understanding what each resident enjoys. Every meal we serve has to be something we’d be proud to present to our nearest and dearest at a special family gathering.

Our restaurant menu evolves with the changing seasons and tastes of our residents who help to plan each meal by offering our chefs feedback and ideas. From the quality of the fresh, locally sourced ingredients and nutritional balance to the attractive presentation, we’re there to listen and make sure that each meal feels like something special, not an afterthought.

Relax and enjoy yourself in our sociable residents’ dining rooms or take an active part preparing food in our life skill kitchens. Enjoy a healthy snack in the comfort of your en-suite room. Catch up with guests or fellow residents over a tasty treat in our comfortable lounges and cheery cafés. And if you’re hungry later on, there’s always a selection of fruit, snacks and hot and cold drinks to enjoy.

Activities Are So Important

Life is always fun at Abbotswood Court. Residents can join in with a host of activities from ‘ZING!’ activity sessions and music events to Bridge Club and sing-alongs. In addition, we often hold themed events to which friends and family are invited: murder-mystery dinners, parties, birthday celebrations and more.

Having our own transport opens up opportunities for days out to the many local attractions in and around Romsey. Whether it’s for a trip to Romsey’s Plaza Theatre, a stroll around Hillier Arboretum, or a visit to Hedge End Shopping Centre or Carlos Ice Cream Parlour, every single outing – spontaneous or planned – is arranged to keep our residents feeling stimulated, connected and happy.

There are always friendly new faces at Abbotswood Court –  children from the local nursery, newborn great-grandchildren, or pop-ins from Vasco, the much-loved local dog. We have close links with our local community as well. Whether it’s the visiting bell ringers, our family get-togethers every Sunday lunchtime, one of our regular Forget Me Not Cafés, or our residents fundraising for the Alzheimer’s’ Society and Dementia UK, it all adds to our varied and vibrant home ilfe.
