Wayne Price is Home Manager at Harbour Care Centre.
Wayne Price, Manager of Harbour Care Centre (HCC) in Portishead, brings nearly 20 years of nursing experience to his role, inspired by caring for his mother with motor neuron disease since age 17.
His impact on HCC is defined by significant capacity building. When he joined the home, it had lost its nursing capability with only 18 residents. Wayne was crucial in restoring nursing services, opening two additional floors, and building a supportive team. Under his leadership, HCC achieved a CQC rating of "Good" in all areas.
Wayne’s philosophy of care emphasizes quality of life over mere survival. He insists a care home must move beyond being "sterile," ensuring residents are actively "living," not just "alive"—achieved through fun and laughter, paired with robust clinical care. To maintain this culture, his management focuses on identifying kindness and compassion, notably by involving residents in the staff interview process to select the most caring candidates.
Harbour Care Centre in Portishead has built a strong reputation for being a warm, flexible, and forward-thinking care home that truly puts people first. What makes it stand out is its commitment to personal, high-quality care and its focus on keeping residents active, engaged, and connected to the wider community.
One of the home’s biggest strengths is its flexibility. Unlike many other homes, Harbour Care Centre can accept emergency respite stays, stepping in quickly when families need support at short notice. The staff will even go out to collect new residents and their belongings to make moving in as smooth and stress-free as possible. It’s a small gesture, but one that says a lot about the team’s caring approach and willingness to go the extra mile.
The manager and staff believe that life in a care home should be full of purpose and enjoyment, not just routine. Their motto could easily be “living, not just existing.” The home avoids relying on agency staff, which means residents are cared for by familiar faces who know them well. Many team members are highly qualified, including experienced overseas nurses who bring specialist knowledge in areas such as wound care and complex health needs. What’s particularly special is that residents play a role in the recruitment process — they help interview new staff to make sure that anyone joining the team is genuinely kind, patient, and compassionate.
Activities are at the heart of daily life at Harbour Care Centre. The team works hard to make sure there’s always something enjoyable going on, whether that’s a gentle chair exercise class, a craft session, or a quiz. The home’s activity programme is designed to reduce isolation and build strong links with the community. Residents regularly take part in swimming sessions at the local Parish Wharf Leisure Centre, enjoy social outings to the nearby pub, and welcome visitors and local groups into the home. These connections create a real sense of belonging and make a huge difference to residents’ wellbeing.
A favourite initiative among residents is the “Make a Wish” programme, which gives people the chance to do something they’ve always wanted — whether that’s revisiting a meaningful place, enjoying a special meal, or trying a new experience. It’s all about creating moments that matter and making sure residents continue to live fulfilling lives.
The home is also developing a “grandchildren garden” — a fun, welcoming outdoor space with play equipment, designed to encourage visits from younger family members. It’s a lovely idea that helps bridge generations and makes family time more enjoyable for everyone.
Behind all of this is a leadership team that truly cares. Under manager Wayne Price, the home has seen a remarkable turnaround — moving from a lower Care Quality Commission (CQC) rating to achieving “Good” across all areas. This success reflects the dedication, teamwork, and positivity that flow through every part of Harbour Care Centre.
In short, Harbour Care Centre is more than just a place to live — it’s a place to belong, to laugh, and to keep enjoying life every day.
