Lesley Sturgeon

The Burren is our new, purpose-built specialist care home in Bristol. It provides specialist care for adults of all ages with complex neurological, physical and mental health conditions.

The home has self-contained Suites that have been specifically designed using our experience of caring for people with complex physical and neurological conditions, focusing on maximising independence and enriching the lives of our residents.

Each Suite is managed by a Senior Nurse who leads a team of nurses and care workers. The teams are supported by our Clinical Manager, an experienced senior nurse, and our General Manager, a highly skilled nurse, meaning our clinician-to-resident ratio is high.

Our high staff-to-resident ratio ensures that the most complex needs are readily met.

Following assessment, our residents are allocated rooms in the Suite best suited to their needs so that the team can safely manage their care and well-being.

What we're doing to keep residents & visitors safe

The Burren is working within the government guidelines to help protect its staff and clients.

Infection Control Initiatives in place
safe-tick Independent Assessments We have been independently assessed in our approach to infection control.
safe-tick Infection Control Training Our staff are trained to use measures which prevent and control infections.
Connectivity for resident testing, monitoring & communications

Infection control and the safety of both residents and staff often requires quarantine measures and the isolation of care home residents. To test, monitor and allow residents to communicate with relatives, the prevalence of room-level connectivity within the home is becoming increasingly relevant.

Our Building and Facilities

The home is divided into separate, self-contained Lodges that provide different types of specialist care for people with complex needs.

On the ground floor, we work with a multidisciplinary team to offer care and support for people with neuro-rehabilitation needs, who may have a brain injury, stroke, or other long-term neurological needs.

We also offer care and support for people who have progressive degenerative conditions, such as Huntington’s disease and people with Parkinsonism-type diseases.

On our middle floor, we offer care and support for people with degenerative brain disease, including complex dementias and mental health conditions. This can include people who may have challenging behaviour.

Our homes all have lovely garden spaces that allow residents to spend time outside with the staff or their visitors. Where residents wish to do so, they can get involved with caring for the garden.

The Burren has comfortable living and dining rooms for residents to spend time communally as they wish, in addition to quieter spaces to meet with visitors, reflect, or have quiet time.

Activities Are So Important

Every day brings a new opportunity to create meaningful experiences. We design our activities with care - intended to inspire, engage, and foster genuine connections among our residents.

Working closely with Nordoff and Robbins, the UK's largest music therapy charity with over 60 years of experience, we bring the transformative power of music into our community. Bespoke sessions allow residents to enjoy music's calming and uplifting effects, nurturing emotional expression and creating warm, heartfelt interactions.

We are equally proud of our close ties with the National Activity Providers Association, which underline our commitment to a life filled with purpose and joy. In partnership with them, we craft stimulating programmes that blend creativity with compassionate care, ensuring that every moment matters.

Each resident is seen, valued, and encouraged to engage fully with life. Our approach is about celebrating small victories and building an environment where genuine connections can flourish daily.
