Autumna has invited care providers to evidence the infection control measures they are carrying out, above and beyond those laid out by the government, in order to keep residents, staff and visitors safe.

What we're doing to keep residents & visitors safe

At our care homes, the safety and wellbeing of residents and staff are at the heart of everything we do. We have developed a safety culture based on prevention, vigilance, transparency, and continuous improvement.

Our commitment begins with robust recruitment and induction practices. Every new team member undergoes enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks and reference verification before starting work. Induction includes comprehensive training in safeguarding, infection prevention, manual handling, emergency procedures, and person-centred care. Ongoing refresher programmes, supervision sessions, and competency assessments ensure that staff maintain up-to-date knowledge and confidence in delivering safe, high‑quality care.

Risk management is deeply embedded in our daily operations. Each resident receives an individualised risk assessment on admission, which is regularly reviewed and updated to reflect changing needs. We use these assessments to guide decisions about mobility support, nutrition, medication, and falls prevention. Staff are trained to report and record accidents, incidents, or near-misses promptly, allowing managers to analyse trends and put corrective actions in place.

Physical safety is supported through carefully maintained environments. Regular health and safety inspections are carried out, fire systems are tested weekly, and all equipment—from hoists to call bells—is serviced and recorded in line with legislation. Infection prevention measures follow UKHSA and local authority guidance, including cleaning schedules, PPE use, and isolation protocols when needed.

Resident wellbeing is safeguarded not just physically but emotionally. Our safeguarding policy ensures that concerns of neglect or abuse—no matter how minor—are reported immediately to the manager and the local authority safeguarding team when appropriate. Residents and their families are encouraged to speak openly about any worries, knowing they will be treated with respect and listened to.

Staff safety is protected through supportive leadership, clear reporting lines, and access to guidance following incidents or challenging behaviour. We conduct regular wellbeing check-ins and provide training in de-escalation, dementia awareness, and mental health first aid to promote resilience and reduce stress.

Through these measures, our care homes provide a safe, nurturing environment where residents can live with dignity and staff can work with confidence. Safety is not treated as a one-time task but as a shared responsibility that evolves with our community’s needs.

Connectivity for resident testing, monitoring & communications

Infection control and the safety of both residents and staff often requires quarantine measures and the isolation of care home residents. To test, monitor and allow residents to communicate with relatives, the prevalence of room-level connectivity within the home is becoming increasingly relevant.
