Mrs Carla Bowman is Manager at Elliscombe House.

Carla is a Registered General Nurse and started her nursing career in the NHS experiencing Cardiology, Intensive Care and Accident and Emergency Nursing. Carla left the NHS in 2012 to experience private healthcare, exploring Forensic Nursing and other Independent Care Providers – predominantly in inadequate services requiring extensive improvement. Carla’s passion to provide high standards of quality care is always at the forefront.

Situated in the South East of Somerset, almost on the borders of Dorset and Wiltshire, Elliscombe House is central to Wincanton, Bruton and Castle Cary. Built in 1901, this elegant Edwardian house has been lovingly restored to offer an uplifting, safe place to enjoy life.

Elliscombe House provides person-centred residential, nursing and respite care for up to 35 elderly individuals. We have all the comforts of home combined with the luxuries of a hotel, with qualified staff available at all times to respond to individual needs.

The entire team at Elliscombe House are fully vaccinated. We are continually updating protocols, in line with directives from Public Health England. Accordingly we have established Covid secure visiting suites in order to welcome visitors to our residents, in accordance with the guidelines shared by the Government.

Elliscombe House is managed and staffed by an outstanding team, bringing a wealth of experience to their respective areas. The Home Manager and Deputy Manager are both experienced qualified nurses, assuring and delivering a safe, quality nurse led service. Both the Administrator and Housekeeper are specialists in care whilst our Estate Manager, Chef and Activities Manager excel in their fields. Collectively, they are a nurturing, confident and happy team whose infectious enthusiasm permeates the home and underpins everything that we do.

We are working with the entire team to craft a vision statement and a set of values in which we all believe and to which we will collectively commit ourselves.

Rachel is a Registered General Nurse, starting her career in the NHS, experienced in spinal orthopaedics, elderly care, elderly frail, dementia care and district nursing. Rachel’s passion for elderly care led her to the private nursing home sector. Safe and person-centred care is Rachel’s passion, which she embeds across the home ensuring the best quality of life for our residents is at the heart of what we do.

Garry has extensive knowledge and experience in the building industry, including health and safety management. Prior to accepting the Elliscombe House Estate Manager role Garry worked as a Heritage Craftsman for Wells Cathedral, and he has also worked on home renovations and garden maintenance in France. Garry’s skills are fundamental to ensuring Elliscombe House and its grounds are well presented, safe, accessible and well managed; he has good knowledge of regulations and legislation in this area.

Ben trained at Somerset College, progressing his catering career from Kitchen Porter to Head Chef. Ben has managed several professional kitchens, predominantly in fine dining restaurants and the gastro pubs industry. On any given day, Ben can be found creating dishes such as Roasted Venison Loin, truffled butternut puree, celeriac fondants and a chocolate jus; or local pheasant breast, leg bon bon, pickled red cabbage, caramelised apple and a truffle dressing. Ben believes the most flavourful cuisine is made simply with the best, fresh, high quality ingredients.

Kath has over 20 years of experience in health care and educational settings, working in hospitals, care homes, private households and schools, in many different countries.  This valuable experience underpins Kath’s understanding and appreciation of individual's background, culture and activity preferences. Our bustling activity plan is at the heart of our home & is strategically planned to include all our residents, Kath can be found leading many of our in-house activities or working with residents to plan upcoming events.  No request is ever too big or too small.

Catharine’s strong aspiration to help people led her to a career in the care industry. Catharine worked as a care assistant for three years, during which time she developed a strong passion for infection prevention control and became the designated lead in this area. Recognising this strength, Catharine swiftly moved into a head housekeeper role. Catharine commenced a BA (Hons) degree in Health and Social Care to develop more knowledge and understanding of the sector. Safe, comfortable and supportive care in an accommodating clean environment is Catharine’s passion.

Steph has worked in administration for 15 years.  Taking a break to experience pharmacy dispensing led Steph to later pursue an administration role within the care industry.  Steph oversees all the administrative tasks within Elliscombe House, directly managing all financial matters such as client billing, accounts payable, payroll and banking.  Despite spending most of her time at her desk, developing & maintaining relationships with our residents is extremely important to Steph & she can often be found taking time out of her day to join our residents for a coffee & a chat.

The Importance Of Meal Times

Mealtimes at Elliscombe House are an important part of the daily life of our care home, and we promote dining with dignity. Our wholesome and nutritious meals are locally sourced and freshly prepared in our kitchens, and we cater for all dietary requirements. Specialist menus are created to meet all our residents’ needs, with an alternative to the menu always available. Our chefs welcome menu suggestions and recipes and are always exploring new ideas.


Residents can choose to eat in our spacious dining room, enjoy fine dining with friends or guests, or in their own rooms. Drinks and snacks are available throughout the day and night. The residents of Elliscombe House can also enjoy a tipple from the Bar.

Activities Are So Important

We recognise that activities positively impact physical and mental health, and that keeping busy is vital for physical and emotional well-being. In addition to our in-house activities plan and numerous days out, our residents enjoy socialising with and supporting the local community through a range of events held at Elliscombe House throughout the year.


Our extensive landscaped grounds and numerous reception rooms offer the perfect setting for an event, and we are always delighted to welcome people into our home.


Our exclusive restaurant evenings form part of Elliscombe House’s social calendar and are always popular with residents who enjoy the atmosphere and experience of silver service. Our restaurant evenings offer the opportunity for residents to spend time and socialise with friends and family. Our restaurant menus have included everything from smoked salmon to medallions of beef fillet with blue cheese and smoked oyster sauce.


From hog roasts in the summer to carol singing with warm home-made mince pies and clotted cream in winter, there is always a reason to socialise at Elliscombe House.
