Autumna has invited care providers to evidence the infection control measures they are carrying out, above and beyond those laid out by the government, in order to keep residents, staff and visitors safe.

What we're doing to keep residents & visitors safe

Avery Healthcare has always made the health and safety of our residents and staff a priority, and the Covid-19 pandemic has required us to raise our exacting standards to even higher levels. That is why we are taking the innovative step to introduce a cleaning system into our care homes that is already proven to kill 99.9% of viruses, including MRSA, e-Coli, norovirus and the SARS virus (which is similar to Cov-2, which causes Covid-19).

Avery is now leading in the care sector with the testing of an established cleaning system that refreshes and sanitises a bedroom in less than an hour, with a larger capacity variant addressing communal areas. Keeping both areas clean in this way will be an effective method in how Avery care homes manage their environments, to keep them as virus and bacteria-free as possible.

All Avery homes are now equipped with Topaz Machines ready for when we can allow visiting into the homes. The system hosts two units, one larger which dispenses hand sanitiser to visitors upon arrival and exit; it also provides an important messaging display screen to advise visitors of the latest news, and the other, a smaller screen, which operates as a thermal checker so that we can support temperature checks of those entering the building. Yet another fantastic piece of technology that provides relatives with safer, more efficient visits with their loved ones.

As we’ve learned during this pandemic, we are all in this together. We want our residents, staff, and their respective families to know that when they are in an Avery care home, that it is one of the safest and cleanest places to be. We also want relatives to be confident that their loved ones are being cared for in the best possible way, and for anyone in the position of placing a loved one in to care, to have the peace of mind that an Avery home will be a clean and safe haven.

Our Building and Facilities

The atmosphere is both relaxing and sociable, with plenty of opportunity to get together with other residents, or just go somewhere quiet if preferred. Our sister home, is just across the road and we often share trips and events together as well as the lovely garden. Our cinema room is well used for afternoon matinées, and there are plenty of opportunities to reminisce, especially for our dementia residents. There is also a fully equipped beauty salon and therapy room for those who like a bit of pampering. And who doesn’t?

Our stylish bedrooms are generously sized and all come with walk-in showers. The Importance Of Meal Times

This cheesecake was one of the prizes our chef baked when we had one of our fete days. Alex, our head chef, has been with our Northampton care home since it opened so certainly knows how to treat the residents, in more senses than one! He has created a team who take pride in catering for all tastes and diets, and who enjoy making excellent spreads for special events. There are regular Ready Steady Cook competitions with our neighboring care home which are great fun!

Residents are actively encouraged to contribute to the planning of weekly menus. Meals are beautifully presented and served in the home’s bright and modern communal dining area and families are welcome to join us at any time; we can arrange for private dining on special occasions too.

In addition to our set meals, residents can enjoy a selection of freshly baked cakes, chocolates and aperitifs throughout the day, so no one has any excuse for going hungry with us. Our seasonal meals are supplied by local Northamptonshire producers where possible and we have been know to grow our own vegatables and herbs.

Activities Are So Important

No, we’re not talking about cocktails, it’s what some of our residents call the Activity Coordinators, as they are quite distinctive in their pink uniform. These ladies initiate, foster and encourage the home’s lively leisure schedule. You would expect knitting and gardening to be on the list, as they are, but here are a few things you might not have anticipated:

  • Weekly carpet bowls tournament –nothing like a bit of friendly competition!
  • Choir practice
  • Nintendo, Wii and Xbox – What! Old people!
  • Bird watching at the local reservoir
  • Country and Western nights
  • Tap dancing lessons – I don’t believe it!

We have a large screen in our cinema room and matinée afternoons are always popular. We often think back to the occasion when a resident could join in with her granddaughter’s wedding in Australia, by watching the whole event, together with a commentary, on the big screen TV. A magical moment, and shows how modern technology is put to best use. We are really keen to facilitate Skype links, but we also have real links, rather than virtual, with the local community and enjoy performances from local Northampton schools, entertainment groups and Age UK, who arrange classical recitals for us.
