Mark Gratton is Manager at Claybourne.
With nearly two decades of experience in the care sector, Mark Gratton leads MHA Claybourne with a strong commitment to person-centred care and community values. Since joining MHA in 2014 as a care assistant, he has progressed through roles in both retirement living and residential care, becoming Home Manager in April 2025. Mark is dedicated to fostering an inclusive, supportive environment where residents, families and colleagues feel truly connected.
MHA Claybourne is a thoughtfully designed dementia care home shaped by the pioneering principles of Tom Kitwood, a world-leading specialist in person-centred dementia care. Every detail of the home reflects his vision, from its free-flowing, spacious layout to its emphasis on connection, comfort and calm. With no stairs or lifts, the environment is intuitive, accessible and supportive for people at every stage of their dementia journey.
At the heart of Claybourne is a longstanding, dedicated team who create a warm and vibrant community. Residents, families, friends and volunteers all play a part in shaping daily life, contributing to a genuine sense of belonging. The home’s characterful atmosphere shines through in its traditions too, including the much-loved “Oatcake Wednesday,” enjoyed by residents and staff alike.
Set within secure, beautifully maintained gardens, the home offers peaceful outdoor spaces that suit relaxation, exploration and social activities. During weekdays, the gentle sound of children playing at the neighbouring school brings additional joy and connection across the generations. Together, these surroundings and relationships make MHA Claybourne a uniquely supportive and uplifting place to live.

Infection control and the safety of both residents and staff often requires quarantine measures and the isolation of care home residents. To test, monitor and allow residents to communicate with relatives, the prevalence of room-level connectivity within the home is becoming increasingly relevant. Each 'avenue' contains residents’ rooms, a living/dining room, assisted bathrooms and ancillary features so that, with the exception of main cooking and laundry facilities, it is ‘self contained’. Each of the lounges opens onto a patio area, which in turn allows access to the large secure gardens with paths, garden seating and a purpose-built sensory garden. It was important that the layout should make sense to residents and allow easy access and circulation but without long, straight corridors. Doors, fittings and fixtures were chosen to reinforce a sense of “home” but at the same time residents have maximum visibility to aid orientation. Fundamental to the design is a large central foyer area which links the groups and provides space in which residents can walk, sit or engage in activities. Here, too, residents can meet for services or larger functions. The hair dressing salon opens off this central area. |
