Meet The Manager

Alyson Day is Home Manager at Avon Valley Care Home.

Working for Avery and commissioning Avon Valley retirement home has been a dream come true, a blank canvas. The chance to develop best practices or routines from the outset as well as recruit my very own team. To be able to develop staff into good ways of working, have staff that are there for the right reasons, build a team that are proud and respectful of what they do.

My passion for this Bristol care home comes not only from my own experience and the knowledge I have gained but also from my own personal life. I’ve had a very personal experience of a loved one needing dementia care, I know the emotional turmoil, the difficulty in letting go or trusting someone else to care for that person. I believe that all individuals should naturally have the right to choose. Why should any person have to change just to be in care?

Situated in Kingswood on the outskirts of Bristol, Avon Valley opened in May of 2019. Just two minutes drive from the A4174 Bristol ring road and 20 minutes from the M4, our care home offers residential, dementia and respite care to residents drawn from across the south Gloucestershire, Somerset and Bristol areas. Our proximity to the South Gloucestershire and Cotswold countryside is a big asset and our communal balconies look out over the beautiful rolling hills beyond Bristol’s city limits.

Autumna has invited care providers to evidence the infection control measures they are carrying out, above and beyond those laid out by the government, in order to keep residents, staff and visitors safe.

What we're doing to keep residents & visitors safe

Avery Healthcare has always made the health and safety of our residents and staff a priority, and the Covid-19 pandemic has required us to raise our exacting standards to even higher levels. That is why we are taking the innovative step to introduce a cleaning system into our care homes that is already proven to kill 99.9% of viruses, including MRSA, e-Coli, norovirus and the SARS virus (which is similar to Cov-2, which causes Covid-19).

Avery is now leading in the care sector with the testing of an established cleaning system that refreshes and sanitises a bedroom in less than an hour, with a larger capacity variant addressing communal areas. Keeping both areas clean in this way will be an effective method in how Avery care homes manage their environments, to keep them as virus and bacteria-free as possible.

All Avery homes are now equipped with Topaz Machines ready for when we can allow visiting into the homes. The system hosts two units, one larger which dispenses hand sanitiser to visitors upon arrival and exit; it also provides an important messaging display screen to advise visitors of the latest news, and the other, a smaller screen, which operates as a thermal checker so that we can support temperature checks of those entering the building. Yet another fantastic piece of technology that provides relatives with safer, more efficient visits with their loved ones.

As we’ve learned during this pandemic, we are all in this together. We want our residents, staff, and their respective families to know that when they are in an Avery care home, that it is one of the safest and cleanest places to be. We also want relatives to be confident that their loved ones are being cared for in the best possible way, and for anyone in the position of placing a loved one in to care, to have the peace of mind that an Avery home will be a clean and safe haven.

In another step by Avery Healthcare to help relative visiting during the pandemic, the Group has invested in more outdoor garden ‘visitor pods’ to be installed at all Avery Healthcare homes.

The pods, installed by Wild Environments, are a garden room specifically designed to facilitate safe face-to-face contact with relatives and visitors. Each pod contains a floor to ceiling partition screen and a hands-free intercom so that communication is clear and safe for use. They are fitted with internal electrics and two, low-surface temperature electric panel heaters.

The Importance Of Meal Times

Meal time is the highlight of our day. Eating is both enjoyable and sociable. Our chef team is trained on delivering choice, quality, seasonality and nutrition in all our meals and we often enjoy themed culinary events too. Chef likes to keep everyone happy and if there is nothing on the menu that you fancy then the team will happily get you something else. Our Chefs ‘follow the food’ and chat with residents about what they like or don’t like and our gardening club see to it that we are nearly self sufficient when it comes to herbs and spices. Much of our food is locally sourced from Bristol and Gloucestershire suppliers or growers, a fact we are very proud of. We even have producers visit the home and present their produce so that residents can see the people behind their ingredients.

Snacks are the perfect accompaniment to the day. There is a procession of cakes and biscuits made available throughout the day, and our frequent guests are most appreciative when they visit loved ones in our cafe. Afternoon tea is something of a regular fixture at our Bristol retirement home, again it is a time to gather and share in the days news or just make some new acquaintances.
