Description

Palm Court achieves high standard of care through well-organised structured staff training and education. Staff undertake a series of blended modules of e-Learning and additional specialist training from private providers and East Sussex Social Services Training Department.

Our philosophy of care focuses on the well-being of each resident with the aim of providing meaningful activities and cognitive stimulation that leads to greater longevity. Palm Court is a place where personhood is celebrated and respected, promoting independence and individuality. Personhood is a recognition of the value of all human beings (regardless of race, sex, disability, age or cognitive ability). Through knowing each of our residents' preferences and passions, we are able to enhance the quality of daily experiences and the quality of person-centred care.

Our aim is to provide a safe, compassionate and caring environment that promotes health and well being. The core elements of our vision is to help residents to be comfortable, safe and happy. Our staff ensure the right care at the right time, delivered by the right people in the right place.
Our goal is to carry out evidence-based actions to nurture and encourage health, convalescence and to enable a dignified, active and peaceful way of living. Our philosophy helps staff to think more critically and reflect on how their own values influence their practice.

Our nursing staff, together with our Home Manager work in close collaboration with the resident, their GP and relatives to create a nursing care plan in the best interests of the resident. Our staff care for our residents with sensitivity respecting confidentiality. We involve the residents and relatives when making decisions about treatment and care. Along with regular care plan reviews, we safeguard the welfare of the residents by holding best interest meetings to ensure decisions are made for the benefit of the residents.

The Importance Of Meal Times

Dining with Dignity is very important to us at Palm Court - meal times are not just about ensuring our residents get the right nutrition, catering for all dysphagia diets - they are important markers that punctuate the day, giving structure and they are also a social trigger. Eating and drinking is an event among friends and family, which has the potential to lighten moods and bring back fond memories of meals together celebrating birthdays or Christmas.

At Palm Court, we try to enrich the dining experience for each resident and make it more of a social event where carers are communicating throughout the meal, chatting as they assist residents. We also encourage other residents to sit with each other and enjoy a meal together.

Relatives are welcome to join their loved ones for meals - we just need a 24 hours notice to make the necessary arrangements for a private lunch or supper.

Activities Are So Important

Both our residents and their relatives have input to the activities and  interests that our Activities  Co-ordinator can organise, either in a 1-to-1 or group setting.

Our dedicated Activities Co-Ordinator engages in meaningful activities with residents in 1-to-1 or group settings as part of our cognitive stimulation and reminiscence therapy three times a week, between 10am and 4pm. Together with the information gathered from the person-centred activities questionnaire and planned themed weeks, we try to increase physical movement and communication levels  - be it tapping a beach ball, baking cup cakes for all the residents to enjoy or taking a walk to see the sensory forest mural and listening to the audio of birds chirping and singing.
