Meet The Manager

Victoria Humphrey is Home Manager at Willowcroft.

Willowcroft is a 60 place residential and dementia Care Home in Spondon, Derbyshire. Willowcroft is located on the Nottingham Road, on the spacious site of the former Angler’s Arms.

Willowcroft is a purpose-built home built over two floors and has recently undergone a £135,000 refurbishment. The home has two wings providing 30 residential places and 30 places for dementia care.

The Home Manager said: “Willowcroft is really very beautiful and in a good location – close to local amenities and a large Asda supermarket. And with a bus stop directly opposite, Derby city centre is a mere ten minutes away.”

Residents at Willowcroft enjoy a wide range of activities and services. “Because MHA is a charity,” the Home Manager explained, “it can offer additional services as well as a varied activities programme. These include the pastoral care of a Chaplain, together with music therapy and reflexology, which have both been shown to contribute to the well-being of individuals living with dementia.”

Willowcroft is working within the government guidelines to help protect its staff and clients.

Infection Control Initiatives in place
safe-tick Independent Assessments We have been independently assessed in our approach to infection control.
safe-tick Infection Control Training Our staff are trained to use measures which prevent and control infections.
Connectivity for resident testing, monitoring & communications

Infection control and the safety of both residents and staff often requires quarantine measures and the isolation of care home residents. To test, monitor and allow residents to communicate with relatives, the prevalence of room-level connectivity within the home is becoming increasingly relevant.

Description

We encourage our residents to furnish their own rooms as they wish. This could be as simple as hanging a couple of their favourite pictures on the wall, but they’re also welcome to bring their own comfy chair, or anything that makes them feel at home. The most important thing is for everyone to feel comfortable, happy and settled. All our rooms have a full en-suite wet room, with toilet and sink. They are fully furnished, including fitted wardrobes, lockable cabinets and a fridge.

We also have some rooms with lovely garden views and doors leading to a private patio. If your loved one enjoys catching up with the latest news, sport, chat shows or soaps, there’s a flat screen TV with Freeview in their room, and we have WiFi throughout the home. We have a call system which can be operated by a hand control or a pendant depending on personal preference. All floors are secured by keypad coding to ensure that residents are safe and secure at all times.

Activities Are So Important

We’ve an optional schedule of events and activities which we change weekly, helping residents to explore their interests and discover new ones. There’s a gardening club, baking, arts and crafts, bingo, quizzes and church services, so never a dull moment. We also have a dedicated chaplain and offer music therapy for our residents living with dementia. Being so close to Derby city centre we like to take regular trips to the garden centre, and often go for lunch out at the local pub.

Our approach to care is a truly holistic one, always with the aim of nurturing your loved one’s mind, body and spirit. This comes as part of our promise to you and our residents, to help them to genuinely live a better, more fulfilled life.

It’s about respecting their individual needs, listening and understanding, presenting them with opportunities and daily activities to keep their minds and bodies active. Whether they flourish in a lively group activity or prefer to re-charge in the peaceful surroundings of one of our quiet spaces, our home is brimming with inspiration and potential.

We support everybody’s individual choices, interests and hobbies and our passionate Activity Coordinators love keeping residents active and entertained. They provide a fun-packed and stimulating schedule for people to participate in as they choose.

There’s a gardening club, art and crafts, external entertainers, bingo, quizzes and church services, just to mention a few of the things we get up to. See our website or key information document for a full list of our regular activities.

We also provide regular gentle exercise sessions and have close links with GP surgeries, district nurses and dentists. Our in-house hair salon keeps everyone looking their best.

We’re committed to helping residents make the most of every single day. Seize The Day is our unique initiative to support residents to fulfil their ambitions and make dreams come true. Whether it be a ride on ‘The Big One’ at Blackpool Pleasure Beach, a trip in a fire engine, or a visit to the swimming pool; we will move mountains to make it happen. Seize the Day is funded by charitable donations and available to all residents.

MHA is a leading provider of music therapy in dementia care across the UK. Funded entirely by charitable donations, these award-winning weekly sessions are led by our highly-trained therapists and can have an incredibly powerful and positive impact on a person’s wellbeing. At Willowcroft our music therapists interact with residents through singalongs, playing simple percussion instruments and responding to musical cues in either a one-to-one or group setting. These sessions often prove to be truly life-enhancing, helping people to unlock special memories and express their feelings and emotions.
