Francesca Lisle is Care Home Manager at The Beeches Residential Care Home.
When you ask what makes this such a special care home, the resounding answer is always that the residents have a direct involvement in every single aspect of life here. No decision is made without their input and this is embedded into the very culture of The Beeches.
Manager Michelle Pilgrim is passionate about supporting her residents to remain as independent as they can be. This means enabling them to make the choices they would have had before moving from their homes across Birmingham into a residential care home. When recruiting new staff some of the residents will sit on the interview panel, asking their own questions and ultimately helping to make the final decision.
The families of our residents, both those receiving residential and dementia care, are very much part of The Beeches. They are encouraged to treat the home as they would have treated their parents’ home before they moved here. For example they visit whenever they like, get involved in activities and every aspect of life in the home and most importantly, help themselves to a cup of tea and a slice of cake! They often join us for our quiz evenings, which can get very competitive, as well as our cheese and wine evenings.
Other popular visitors are student paramedics from Birmingham City University, who come to The Beeches for work experience placements. We even have toddlers from the local nursery in Northfield who come and teach our residents Spanish!

Infection control and the safety of both residents and staff often requires quarantine measures and the isolation of care home residents. To test, monitor and allow residents to communicate with relatives, the prevalence of room-level connectivity within the home is becoming increasingly relevant. Residents are involved in decisions about absolutely everything, from the colour scheme if parts of the home are being redecorated to new areas they would like to see created.Recently some of the residents said they would like a new area to take their loved ones and visitors, outside of the main lounge. With this in mind a pop up coffee shop was created, with comfortable seating and café style tables. There is a cake of the day which is freshly baked by the chef. Whether a coffee cake or a traditional Victoria sponge, the plate is always cleared! The residents also wanted a cinema room, so we have created a new area where they love to watch a movie matinee with popcorn! Outside the care home there is a sensory garden which was created with the help of students from the National Citizen Service, who work with us annually on a special project to benefit the residents. The area has a fish pond, a vegetable patch where we are currently growing spring onions, carrots and potatoes, as well as beautiful flower beds which our residents and their loved ones maintain. |
