Meet The Manager

Hessie Alayu is Registered Manager at Springkell House Care Home.

I started working at Springkell House in 2010 as a carer. I moved from the Philippines to with my husband. My working career was in hospitality as a Hotel Supervisor but I was keen to take up new career and being passionate about people going into care seemed the right thing to do.

Since working at Springkell House and for Beritaz Care I have grown in confidence and developed my career, working as a senior carer to team leader to assistant manager to the registered manager. With the support of the management team at Beritaz Care I have developed my skills and knowledge whilst not losing sight of why I wanted to work in care, “the residents”. The residents bring so much joy, pleasure a wealth of history that is inspiring and amazing.

You don’t have to be experienced in care to achieve a successful fulfilling career. Beritaz Care will support you all the way!

I started at Springkell when I was just 18 – hence my nickname, ‘Springkell Baby’, which still sticks even though I now have my own children!

Springkell House and the residents who live with us has been my life passion, I am very passionate about making sure they receive high standards of care all the time. My career has been progressive moving from a carer’s position to a senior carer position and now a team leader. In this time I have been supported to achieve qualifications in care, gaining a NVQ Level 3 in Health & Social Care, specialising in dementia care: I’m the home’s Dementia Care and Wound Care Champion.

I am proud to be working for Springkell House and to have been part of the team who won the Best Dementia Care Team Award in 2013.

Chef

I began my professional catering career as an Army chef, I then worked in restaurants before coming to Springkell House in 2004. The management team and Beritaz Care are forward thinking and encourage you to develop your skills and knowledge. I have achieved NVQ 2 in catering, NVQ 3 in Hospitality and in 202 I achieved Diploma 4 in Hospitality Management. I have overall responsibility for managing the kitchen.

I take real pride in the food we serve at Springkell House, ensuring that it is good quality, healthy and appetising. Spending time with the residents creating menus and seeing clean plates at the end of mealtimes is very rewarding for me.

A highlight of my career and my proudest moment was being nominated as a finalist for Chef of Year at Surrey Care Associations 2019 Care Awards. In 2019 we also started a luncheon club for Hindhead’s local community, the response and the feedback from has been brilliant

Team Leader

I joined the team at Springkell House in September 2019, my husband and a friend told me about the vacancy at Springkell House, I applied and haven’t looked back since. My only regret is I wished I had joined Springkell House earlier.

Springkell House is a great place to work, the management and staff go out of their way to make you feel welcome and part of the team. The management are very supportive of their staff, they want you to develop your skills and progress. Since working at Springkell House my skills and confidence has grown. They want you to do well and are there for you when you need them. Staff are happy to share their knowledge and experiences, everyone supports everyone else, you feel equal and valued.

I see a long and exciting future at Springkell House.

Prior to working at Springkell House I lived and worked in my home country of Romania as a Social Worker. I spent several years working for the Directorate of Child Protection. I moved to the UK in 2015 and commenced working in Elderly Care. My first role at Springkell House was a Care Assistant, progressing to Senior Carer very quickly. I have enjoyed the opportunity to develop my knowledge and career and now have the role of Team Leader.

Activities Coordinator

I have not always worked in care, prior moving to England from my home country Slovakia I was a dress designer and worked in retail becoming a manager of a shop before taking time out to have my children.

My husband Jogi started working at Springkell House, meeting his colleagues encouraged me to join the Springkell House team. I first started working as one of the domestic team and helping out in the kitchen. I’m now the activities coordinator which has allowed me to utilise my creative skills and have more contact with the residents which I enjoy very much. With the support of the manager I successfully achieved a Diploma in activities.

I feel I have grown as a person and in confidence since working at Springkell House but most of all I am rewarded everyday seeing the residents happy and engaged in the activities we put in place.

Care Assistant

I have over 30 years’ experience in nursing and residential homes, specialising in care of the elderly with dementia. I joined the team at Springkell House in 2011. We get a lot of support, both professionally and personally, from the management, which means a lot. To see the residents smile and laugh, to make them happy, form a bond with them and make a difference – that’s what I love most about this job.

This is my first experience of working in care and I am pleased I applied to work at Springkell House, it has really helped my self-development. The working environment at Springkell House is great, the residents, management and staff team are great. Everyone is really helpful, friendly and supportive. Since starting at Springkell House I have learnt a great deal about looking after the elderly, the training I have received is very good, providing me with the right knowledge in how to look after people safely.
