Meet The Manager

Gillian Goodall is Home Manager at Cairdean House.

I’m a registered nurse and have been working for Care UK since 2013. I used to be the unit manager for Edinburgh’s ‘step down’ service when it was here at the home. It was a service with three different businesses working together within it – Care UK, Edinburgh City Council and NHS Lothian. It was quite a challenge to set it up in a way that worked for all departments. But we managed it and the service became very effective, enabling patients to receive the interim care they needed before returning home or going into permanent residential care.

I remember coming to Cairdean for the first time and thinking how amazing it was. I wished that one day I’d be able to work my way up to manager here – and I have!

Away from work I have four dogs, who take up most of my time, and I regularly look after my two grandchildren. Life is pretty full!

Cairdean House was designed to the latest dementia standards by internationally renowned architect, Richard Pollock, and there’s a homely, welcoming atmosphere, with inviting spaces for relaxation.

Our Colinton care home has its own coffee shop, hair salon and cinema, and we’re always exploring new ways to make the home more luxurious for residents. We recently refreshed the outdoor terraces and the décor in the coffee shop, and created a more homely atmosphere in our reception area, with comfortable seating, a television and a fireplace.

The home is arranged into nine small suites, each with a shared lounge, dining area and new kitchenette. All shared spaces are frequently cleaned and there are hand gel and hand wash stations available throughout the home. We support residents to maintain their independence as much as possible, and, if they wish, they’re welcome to make their own drinks and snacks in the kitchenettes.

All Care UK homes now have purpose-built internal or external visiting suites available which enable visits to take place from behind a sealed glass panel, using a sound system to assist with communication. Where Government guidance and local health teams allow, these suites make it possible to continue visiting even when we have a case of Covid-19 in the home.

Connectivity for resident testing, monitoring & communications

Infection control and the safety of both residents and staff often requires quarantine measures and the isolation of care home residents. To test, monitor and allow residents to communicate with relatives, the prevalence of room-level connectivity within the home is becoming increasingly relevant.

Wireless Internet access (WiFi)

Yes, our care home has WiFi in all our resident’s rooms.

Mobile Phone Network Coverage (mobile “signal”)

Yes, our care home has mobile phone signal in all our resident’s rooms.

Telephone for external calling

No, our care home does not provide a telephone in residents’ rooms.

Social media provides an up to date window on the activities within a provider's setting.

With the restrictions on visiting during the pandemic, social media platforms such as these offer real insight when you are choosing a provider.

Deputy Manager

I’ve worked my way up through the ranks. I started as a Carer and then trained as a Nurse and have worked in hospitals, hospices, and care homes. I’ve also been a home manager. I wanted to join Care UK because it has a superb reputation for delivering great care and for the opportunities it offers its teams.

I think it’s important to be caring, empathetic and compassionate in this role. You need to enjoy what you do and be open to change, because the care sector is ever evolving. One thing there’s never enough of is time, so you need to be well organised too!

One of the best parts of my job is supporting the team to deliver great care and chatting to the residents. I love hearing all about their lives and learning new things about people I thought I knew well. We have a fantastic team here at Cairdean House. We work together well and support each other. I’m looking forward to working with them to deliver even better care in our Edinburgh care home.

Customer Relations Manager

I spent some months looking for a care home for my mum, and eventually decided on a Care UK home. I was so impressed with the whole process and the continuing support and care my mum receives that I decided I wanted to work for the organisation.

While I used to work in customer relations in the motor industry, moving to the social care sector has been a steep learning curve, particularly getting to grips with regulations, contracts and how we work with local authorities.

One of the best aspects of my job is meeting prospective residents and their families. It's an emotional experience looking for care for a loved one, and people can often be tearful when we lift the burden from them, and they see that their loved one will be cared for like one of our family. It’s very satisfying to help families.

Claire Carson
Claire Carson
Lifestyle Lead

I started at Cairdean House as a carer in 2015 before becoming a team leader and the Lifestyle Lead in 2019. I wanted to join the company to help people and give residents happiness in later life.

My favourite part of my job is seeing the residents smile during the activities and reminiscing time. To be successful in this role I believe you need to be a people person, enthusiastic, be able to think out of the box with new ideas and be very organized.

I really enjoy doing charitable events and a highlight so far in my career has been absolutely smashing our targets and exceeding on expectations.

Unit Manager Clinical and Infection Prevention and Control Champion

The role of Infection Prevention & Control (IPC) Champion is vital in ensuring that colleagues maintain a high standard of hygiene and cleanliness in the home, keeping residents and colleagues safe. They work hard to deliver the relevant training to the team, complete audits and keep on top of the legislation and guidelines.

Canine Relations Manager

My dad, Richard, is the Customer Relations Manager at the home, and I’m a CRM now too! I came in to work with him one day and didn’t want to leave, so we made the decision that I should work here on a permanent basis as part of the team.

Everyone treats me like a VIP when I walk around the home. This must be what it’s like being a royal. Except with more tummy rubs and dog treats. The only challenge is remembering everyone’s name – oh, and saying hello to all the residents before I need to have a nap.

My job is to put smiles on faces and to share the love. In fact, I have so much love to give that I just have to share it with anyone I meet. Any stranger is usually a lifelong friend within seconds. What can I say? It’s a gift I have. See you soon!
