Meet The Manager

Gillian Goodall is Home Manager at Cairdean House.

I’m a registered nurse and have been working for Care UK since 2013. I used to be the unit manager for Edinburgh’s ‘step down’ service when it was here at the home. It was a service with three different businesses working together within it – Care UK, Edinburgh City Council and NHS Lothian. It was quite a challenge to set it up in a way that worked for all departments. But we managed it and the service became very effective, enabling patients to receive the interim care they needed before returning home or going into permanent residential care.

I remember coming to Cairdean for the first time and thinking how amazing it was. I wished that one day I’d be able to work my way up to manager here – and I have!

Away from work I have four dogs, who take up most of my time, and I regularly look after my two grandchildren. Life is pretty full!

Cairdean House was designed to the latest dementia standards by internationally renowned architect, Richard Pollock, and there’s a homely, welcoming atmosphere, with inviting spaces for relaxation.

Our Colinton care home has its own coffee shop, hair salon and cinema, and we’re always exploring new ways to make the home more luxurious for residents. We recently refreshed the outdoor terraces and the décor in the coffee shop, and created a more homely atmosphere in our reception area, with comfortable seating, a television and a fireplace.

The home is arranged into nine small suites, each with a shared lounge, dining area and new kitchenette. All shared spaces are frequently cleaned and there are hand gel and hand wash stations available throughout the home. We support residents to maintain their independence as much as possible, and, if they wish, they’re welcome to make their own drinks and snacks in the kitchenettes.

safe-tick We have a safe visiting space

All Care UK homes now have purpose-built internal or external visiting suites available which enable visits to take place from behind a sealed glass panel, using a sound system to assist with communication. Where Government guidance and local health teams allow, these suites make it possible to continue visiting even when we have a case of Covid-19 in the home.

Connectivity for resident testing, monitoring & communications

Infection control and the safety of both residents and staff often requires quarantine measures and the isolation of care home residents. To test, monitor and allow residents to communicate with relatives, the prevalence of room-level connectivity within the home is becoming increasingly relevant.

Customer Relations Manager

I joined Care UK in 2020 as I was looking for a career move where I could really make a difference. I feel that supporting older people is a real privilege and a sense of giving back. Before working here, I worked as a Business Development Manager within the motor industry for 15 years.

Working at Cairdean I enjoy being part of the family from the team to the residents - it is a complete family culture and to be part of that is very special.

To do well in this role, I feel you have to be a people person. From the initial enquiry from the loved ones, understanding their needs and wishes. This is an emotional time for the resident and family so we need to make them feel fully supported throughout. I also love to meet the residents, listen to their amazing stories and of course see how much Cairdean is a ‘home from home’ to them.

Lifestyle Lead

I started at Cairdean House as a carer in 2015 before becoming a team leader and the Lifestyle Lead in 2019. I wanted to join the company to help people and give residents happiness in later life.

My favourite part of my job is seeing the residents smile during the activities and reminiscing time. To be successful in this role I believe you need to be a people person, enthusiastic, be able to think out of the box with new ideas and be very organized.

I really enjoy doing charitable events and a highlight so far in my career has been absolutely smashing our targets and exceeding on expectations.
