Meet The Manager

Claire Cullen is the General Manager at Cumnor Hill House.

I am delighted to be joining Berkley Care Group as General Manager of Cumnor Hill House. I have had the privilege of working within care for the past 25 years. I started my journey within Finance then Regional Finance before moving to Home Manager and General Manager. I also have the additional experience of being a relative of a loved one in care, I was incredibly fortunate to support my grandma in one of my homes for a number of years.

I live in Chieveley, near Newbury with my husband and youngest son. We have 2 amazing boys with my eldest living in Rotterdam. We have a beautiful cockapoo puppy, Lottie who enjoys the benefits of living in the countryside, daily walks being such a blessing especially during the last few months.

I am passionate that the residents we are entrusted to care for enjoy a person-centred experience every day, working together with residents and families to ensure we support in the best way possible to enhance their lives.

Claire Cullen

Cumnor Hill House is a care home that often does things differently. Not just for the sake of it, but we are always striving to improve, to offer more varied activities or a different approach to visiting and inclusion. Why? - To make sure our home is better in every regard, and so our residents receive companionship, stimulation and great value. For a long time, care homes have trodden a certain path, and while many of them deliver excellent care, the rest often gets forgotten in a bid to keep costs down and occupancy up. By ‘the rest' we mean the food, the gardens, the activities and the staffing levels.

Living at Cumnor Hill House is not just about receiving great care (which comes as standard, as you'll see) but about enjoying the things in life that you have always enjoyed.

In beautiful surroundings with a team of people who are passionate about what they do each day and by aiming for excellence in every area, it makes the experience of living in a care home a fantastic life experience, as well as the best place to receive exceptional care.

Description

We have decided to take the lead within the care sector which is why we pay all of our staff above the living wage; not the minimum wage, not the living wage but above the living wage. The results of doing this are that we have a care team who know they are respected and valued, and we are able to attract the best people to work in our home. Everybody wins, but most of all our residents.

Head Chef

Hi, my name is Andy Lawrence. I started working as the Head Chef at Cumnor Hill House since opening in March of 2016. I have over 28 years of experience as a chef, working in most sectors of catering from hotels, private dining, education and even working abroad. I gained a great deal of knowledge of nutrition working at a prestigious private school as an executive chef which has been invaluable as we have freedoms to cook a wide and varied menu.

I love working at Cumnor Hill House and the personal resident care within the food side of things I find very rewarding. Alongside catering for our residents I have gained an invaluable insight into care on a general level to which I also find very rewarding.

The Importance Of Meal Times

Food should be enjoyed however you want to. We have thought long and hard about what our residents like to eat and how they like meals to be served. We found that food and the social aspect surrounding it is something that most people hold dear; it evokes memories of different eras in one’s life, various people, and celebration. We think that in itself is something worth savouring.

We have created lovely welcoming spaces within Cumnor Hill House for meals and snacks - variety is the order of the day. There is the main bar and bistro, thoughtfully divided up into areas where people can enjoy a meal together, and places where couples, individuals and small groups can easily congregate to chat and relax over coffee and biscuits.

The jewel in the crown for the foodies among you will be the fine dining room. Our residents are welcome to invite their families into the home for dinner, a special birthday, or just because they feel like it.

That's what sets this care home apart from the others – attention to the real desires of the individual, not just words. When we say that we want our residents to treat it as their home, we mean it. Having space to invite your friends round in turn makes visiting hours longer, more relaxed, more enjoyable. Ask to see our fine dining and bistro menus.

Activities Are So Important

Who doesn't love a great night out? Or a grand night in. At Cumnor Hill House you will never be left wondering what to do. Of course if you'd like your peace and quiet then that is your wont and your wishes are always respected, but on the nights you fancy putting on your glad rags, you can rest assured that the variety of fun on offer at Cumnor Hill House will never disappoint.

From singers & performers to roulette tables and wine tastings – our events program is only limited by our combined imagination. There are activities for everyone, all week, whether you love painting, or reminiscing, or just walking around the gardens admiring the planting, there will always be some sort of structured activity for you to join in as frequently as you wish. We also have a partnership with the local cricket club, so if watching a spot of leather on willow is your thing, our residents are always welcome in the pavilion.

The specific nature and timing of activities offered are decided by our residents and we will always do our best to facilitate their choice. Below are some examples of the type of activities favoured by our residents:

Inspiring lectures; Visits to the coast; Day trips to London; Pottery classes; Painting lessons; Photography courses; Live music; Visits by theatre groups; Gardening club.
