Meet The Manager

Karen Curle is Home Manager at Cavell Court.

I first became a Home Manager back in 1987, and I’ve worked in the public and private sector in older people’s services in organisations large and small.

I enjoy supporting the team at mealtimes. It’s my chance to fetch and carry for colleagues, or to simply sit and support a resident to enjoy their meal. People are relaxed and keen to chat, so there’s a nice atmosphere. I feel privileged to have the chance to share a story or a smile and to enhance a person’s day.

Away from work, I love cooking a delicious meal from scratch. I used to live in Italy where food is such a big part of everyday life. There’s nothing better than getting friends and family together to laugh, have fun and enjoy great food.

Autumna has invited care providers to evidence the infection control measures they are carrying out, above and beyond those laid out by the government, in order to keep residents, staff and visitors safe.

Infection Control Initiatives in place
safe-tick Infection Control Training Our staff are trained to use measures which prevent and control infections.
safe-tick Infection Screening We are using technology to screen for infections & monitor symptoms.
safe-tick Sterilisation & Disinfection Devices We are using sterilisation and/or disinfection devices within our care setting.
safe-tick Virus Testing We are testing for viral infection when symptoms present within our care setting.
Safe Visiting Space
safe-tick We have a safe visiting space

All Care UK homes now have purpose-built internal or external visiting suites available which enable visits to take place from behind a sealed glass panel, using a sound system to assist with communication. Where Government guidance and local health teams allow, these suites make it possible to continue visiting even when we have a case of Covid-19 in the home.

Connectivity for resident testing, monitoring & communications

Infection control and the safety of both residents and staff often requires quarantine measures and the isolation of care home residents. To test, monitor and allow residents to communicate with relatives, the prevalence of room-level connectivity within the home is becoming increasingly relevant.

Robin Bedford
Robin Bedford
Deputy Manager

I started working at Care UK in 2015. I was looking for a change in career and Care UK’s focus on providing the best quality care whilst fulfilling the lives of older people encouraged me to work at Cavell Court, which is a beautiful home.

I first joined as a Care Assistant, having never worked in the care industry before, and have received an incredible amount of support, encouragement and training which has enabled me to develop and become Deputy Manager in five years. I have never looked back and would not have achieved all that I have without a fantastic team to work with.

My favourite part of the day is interacting with the residents. When you work in care it is not just a job, but you become part of a family and developing relationships with the residents is the reason I do what I do.

Sam Woods
Sam Woods
Customer Relations Manager

I joined Care UK in 2014, as I wanted to work for an organisation that lives by its values and puts people, both residents and employees, at the heart of everything they do.

I think it’s important to be a good listener in this role, never make assumptions and ask the right questions, in order to understand what people are looking for in a care home. I really enjoy meeting new residents and welcoming them into our beautiful care home. My favourite part of the day is getting to know each resident and learning about their life experiences.

Receptionist and Administrator

I have two decades’ experience of working in care homes, as well as in the recruitment of nurses and care assistants. I’ve even commissioned and run a small residential home. I also worked in the Family and Children department at Norwich Crown Court.

I joined Cavell Court in May 2018. I enjoy the atmosphere of care homes, and getting to know residents and their families, and I was keen to work in a new home that was doing great things.

Day to day, I love welcoming visitors and new residents to the home and helping them to get settled quickly. I enjoy spending time with residents and learning more about them. Seeing the people we care for looking happy, making new friends and enjoying their life at the home brings me a huge amount of job satisfaction.

Head Chef

I first joined Care UK in 2020. Before I joined Cavell Court I worked in various roles within the care, education, and residential sector of the catering industry.

Working as a Head Chef, you need to have a good understanding of flavours and textures and the importance of this within a care setting. I’m looking forward to developing dining with dignity in the home and seeing how we can focus on this as a team.

In my free time I am a keen gardener and until recently I had a productive vegetable patch. I also enjoy staying at old style British seaside resorts and admiring the past glamour of once grand hotels.

Maintenance

I joined the team at Cavell Court in 2021. My background has always been in construction, but recently it has been focused on property and garden maintenance.

To do well in this role, you need to be adaptable, knowledgeable, kind, and considerate. I always recommend to new starters to ask plenty of questions when they join, as there is so much to find out.

So far, my biggest challenge has been getting all our compliance checks and tests completed as well as any repairs that crop up.

The best part of my day is when the hot trolleys come off the suites, it’s then my time for some extremely nice food as our chef create some fantastic meals at Cavell Court.

Stacey Thorne
Stacey Thorne
Head Housekeeper

I first started as a carer in the home in 2020 and I then developed into my current role as Head Housekeeper. I’m really looking to developing my career further and I’m pleased to have been enrolled onto an apprenticeship course.

I decided to work for Care UK because it’s a company that values its employees and residents one of the UK's leading care home providers. We have a fantastic domestic team and without their support it would not have been possible.

To work well here, you need to be passionate, motivated, and able to prioritise and be extremely organised as well as being proactive. One of my favourite parts of my job is at mealtimes as it's a pleasure to see our residents enjoying their meals. I really enjoy chatting and assisting with our residents and helping colleagues.

When I’m not working, I very much enjoy socialising with friends and family for days out, drinks and meals too. I unwind by visiting the coast with my dogs.
