Meet The Manager

Racquel Merdegia is General Manager at Bourley Grange.

I’m a trained nurse and have a passion for delivering high quality dementia care and end of life care. I’ve been a care home General Manager for over five years and can’t imagine doing anything else, I love what I do. Care UK puts residents at the heart of everything – something that echoes my values and care ethos.

We’re a closely-knit team at Bourley Grange; residents and colleagues are like one big family. I enjoy guiding the team to do their best work, modelling great care and even providing hands on care whenever the team needs some extra support.

In my free time, I enjoy travelling and getting out into nature. I also do some voluntary work, and I get a huge buzz out of raising money for good causes like the Alzheimer’s Society. I even did a skydive to fundraise for them!

Racquel Merdegia

Bourley Grange is a purpose-built luxury care home in a pleasant residential area of Church Crookham, close to the historic Tweseldown racecourse and playing fields.

The home is organised into four self-contained households, each with its own lounge, dining room, and specially trained and allocated team.

The dedicated team work hard to deliver several different types of specialised care in one home, including residential, dementia, and nursing care. So even if your loved ones care needs change in the future, they will be able to manage those changing needs and provide a home for life.

Their large garden has a raised flower beds and an allotment for residents who enjoy growing vegetables. There are wheelchair accessible pathways and plenty of seating areas which provide a pleasant outdoor space to enjoy at all times of the year.

I’ve been part of the Bourley Grange team for nearly ten years. My husband is in the armed forces, so we moved around a lot, and I’d worked as a kitchen assistant for the Forces Children’s Trust in Germany before I joined the home. Every day is different when you work in a care home, but it’s always rewarding! In this role it’s important to be flexible, positive, able to multitask, and to be a good communicator.

I enjoy making the residents and their families happy – giving them the advice and information they may need, and offering a listening ear. I also enjoy helping with activities when I can, which is always huge fun.

Registered Nurse

I was a Unit Manager before I joined the Bourley Grange team as a nurse. I had a great welcome from everyone here, which made me realise what a great care home I’d joined. It feels like one big family.

Teamwork is important in a care home. To work well as a nurse it’s important to listen to the team, as well as residents and their families, and to respect everyone. The residents truly make this job rewarding and I enjoy any time I get to spend interacting with them and learning more about their lives and interests. That’s the great advantage of being a nurse in a care home as opposed to a hospital.

I joined the Bourley Grange team because I was keen to join a professional team that’s committed to the highest standards of care. Care UK’s approach to care – where residents are at the heart of everything we do – was also hugely appealing and echoed my own personal values.

I’m enjoying learning something new every day. The Bourley Grange team works closely with multidisciplinary teams in the community which I love. This helps me to expand my knowledge of different disciplines as well as of the care sector as a whole.

I love every day in this role. I’m passionate about supporting residents to enjoy the best quality of life and helping them to experience joy and meaning in each day. It’s a privilege to be able to support older people in this way.
