My name is Harry Garston and I am very proud to be the General Manager here. I have worked at the home since early 2016, after serving my commission in the British Army. It is a company whose values and beliefs closely align to my own beliefs and I am passionate about the care we provide to the residents. The favourite element of my day is always getting to know the residents. This allows me to better support the team here to provide person-centred care to everyone.

Situated near Leatherhead, our residents enjoy close proximity to the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding National Beauty, Polesden Lacey and RHS Garden Wisley. With an individualised care plan for each resident, we make sure everyone gets the right level of care for their needs. Our dedicated activities and events coordinator plans a variety of activities and events each week to keep our residents active and engaged.

Gracewell of Bookham has a stunning garden and courtyard that stretches the length of the care home. Our residents enjoy strolling around the grounds, and taking in the fresh air. All our Gracewell locations have team members that are qualified and experienced in offering palliative care.     I started my career as a nurse within a private hospital. Throughout my time there, I found my passion for palliative care. I then went to specialise in this area at a local hospice where I worked in the community as a palliative care nurse specialist. It was through this role that I started coming to the home. Since the first time I walked into the building I felt welcomed and part of the team. I supported the home here for over a year as a community nurse specialist and then joined the team as a Clinical Nurse Manager before being promoted to Deputy Manager.

    I joined the home in March 2020 as Head Chef, and I am really excited be part of such a fantastic team. I have worked in the catering industry for 15 years and have been a Chef Manager for eight years. Nutrition, hydration and dining are such an important part of the resident's day, and I, along with my team, want to make this experience the very best. I also enjoy taking time out of my day to chat to the residents, finding out about their favourite recipes and how they spent time in the kitchen.

    As the Home Admissions Advisor my role is to help prospective residents and their families through understanding what’s important to them as well as showing them the benefits of our beautiful home and how we offer solutions bespoke to each resident.     My name is Derek Hurst and I am the Maintenance Coordinator here having been at the home since it opened in August 2017. I have been in the building trade since I left school starting with my apprenticeship as a carpenter/joiner working up to site manger then coming into the care home sector. I have always been a caring and willing person, putting the needs of others above my own. I have also helped out here with driving the minibus for resident trips out because it gives me a lot of pleasure seeing their happiness when out on the trips. My aim is to respect everyone, the residents, our visitors and our team as I always respect everyone equally.

    I was born in 1930 in South London and spent wartime years in North Devon, my father was an army officer and my mother was a civil servant. My educational years were spent at Effingham and Brixton. I then, for a large part of my career, was a Senior Marine Economist. I also spent one and half years in the Royal Navy for my national service. I had a wonderful marriage to Barbara for 59 years, sadly Barbara is no longer with us. Bookham became my home in December 2017 and soon after I became resident ambassador. I am often asked to meet with potential new residents and their families to talk about what it’s like to call here home and give insight on daily life here. I also assist the team with interviewing new members of the team, and I feel my opinion is valued and the voice of us as residents is really taken into account when making decisions.

    The Importance Of Meal Times

    We know that good food makes people happy. So we make sure everyone's personal preferences and dietary requirements are catered for in our care home.

    We also make sure that we use the best possible ingredients, including meat from Donald Russell, suppliers of meat and poultry to H.M. The Queen and many top restaurants.

    What’s more, we can tell you the precise nutritional value of every single dish we produce in our kitchens.

    As well as serving three delicious meals every day, we make sure our residents – especially those living with dementia – have easy access to snacks and drinks throughout the day and night. Proper nutrition and hydration is essential to health and wellbeing. For residents who are living with dysphagia, the medical term for difficulty in swallowing, we create food that is not only easy to take but also looks and tastes appealing.
