Meet The Manager

Sara Maynard is General Manager at Tyspane.

Nursing has been my life for over 35 years! I trained in Cambridge in the early eighties and have worked for the NHS in general practice and in the private sector. My passion has always been to provide the best service for all and give people a voice. I had a particular interest in respiratory medicine and led a community respiratory service for North Devon, at the time being very involved with the British Lung Foundation.

I have been a registered manager for three different homes since 2010, having a particular interest in empowering residents to lead a full and happy life.

I am thrilled to be joining Tyspane and working with people and healthcare professionals that I have known and respected for a long time.

Barchester has given me the opportunity to deliver the best care and services in such beautiful surroundings. I am excited to be working with the team to offer the highest standards of care to our aging community.

Sara Maynard

Tyspane is a purpose-built care home home that provides high quality residential and 24-hour nursing care for older people, alongside younger adults with multiple sclerosis or physical disabilities. We also offer an intense rehabilitation programme for people with a wide variety of conditions on a long or short-term basis.

Our multidisciplinary rehabilitation team consists of professionals, including nurses, healthcare assistants and a physiotherapist, who provide a holistic, person-centred approach based on working towards identified individual goals. Our individualised approach to care is reflected in all aspects of our home, including our cooking, hospitality and organised activities.

Tyspane Care Home is located within walking distance of the old village of Braunton and close to the glorious beaches and rugged countryside of Exmoor. The home is set within its own beautifully landscaped gardens, situated on the North Devonshire coast with panoramic views across the Taw Estuary.

Here at Tyspane Care Home, we provide person-centred nursing care services for older people in need of support. It is important to us that our care services are delivered in a way that celebrates each person’s individuality and helps them to maintain as much independence as possible, so we tailor our services to meet the unique needs of each person. This could include personal one-to-one time with staff members when needed, regular visits from a chiropodist or just adhering to special dietary requirements. Our current rating of 9.1 on carehome.co.uk shows just how pleased residents and loved ones are with our care services.

Our staff are what hold the home together. Each one of these team members are dedicated to providing high quality care and services to those we support, and ensuring that residents enjoy all aspects of life at our home. See below to meet some of our friendly faces:

The Importance Of Meal Times

Food and Nutrition at Tyspane

Our catering team at Tyspane Care Home consists of experienced chefs who offer only the best in nutritional and delicious food, which reflects the individual tastes and dietary needs of people living at the home. They also love creating cakes for birthdays and other treats for special occasions to make those events that little bit sweeter. Sometimes we’ll even throw on the barbecue and cook up a storm in the summer heat. To get a flavour of the menu we serve here, please see the examples below.

Dietary requirements

For residents that have difficulties in swallowing we modify the menu of the day so that is it a soft, palatable dish. To support our chefs in producing these dishes, our hospitality and Chef Academy organises theory and practical workshops. Working in partnership with Nutricia, our practical workshops involve all chefs and deputy managers learning about dysphagia and producing these modified menus. The chefs work with the chef trainer to prepare fork mashable and thick puree meals to the correct consistency, taste and presentation. The deputy managers can then ensure all modified menus served are presented correctly for our residents.

Attracting top chefs

Our chefs are recruited on the basis of an interview with the regional hospitality support team and the manager for the home. Selection also involves a practical element where potential cooks are asked to cook for and meet a panel of people living in the home. Chefs take their job extremely seriously and our annual Chef competition sees our chefs battle it out in regional heats and then at a national final for the accolade of 'Barchester's Chef of the Year'.

Activities Are So Important

Our activities team are great at building the activities programme around the likes and interests of the people we care for. Ensuring that our social events offer fun and adventure is part of the ethos of our home; it’s important that those we support can enjoy an active and social lifestyle. Of course, there will always be those who prefer peace and quiet, and in these instances, a cup of tea and a chat are always welcomed.
