Care Provider: The Elms Residential Home (Yeovil) Limited

Meet The Manager

Louise Turner is Registered Manager at The Elms Residential Home.

Hi I'm Louise. I'm passionate about delivering high standards of care for the residents we look after. I've been in the care industry for 24 years starting off as a care assistant, learning from the bottom, and working my way up to become a registered manager. I'm dedicated, hard working, conscientious, and have an in-depth knowldege of care. I like to give staff the same opportunities I've had and I encourage them to progress themselves through training and take on more responsibility. We are a great team here at The Elms and we ensure everyone gets a good quality of care and enjoys themselves - I can usually tell from the laughter I hear from both staff and residents in the corridors. Unlike other homes, The Elms is really a home from home for the residents with a friendly, relaxed atmosphere - this is how we like it to be.

Louise Turner

The Elms is a well-established family-owned care home located in the village of Yeovil Marsh offering views of the rolling Somerset countryside. The home is relatively small and has a team of skilled staff who genuinely take time to get to know residents personally. All the rooms are ground floor, en-suite and enjoy plenty of natural light. The Elms has gone through a refurbishment program to modernise rooms, hallways and common areas. Food is prepared fresh daily by a dedicated chef and the home provides a varied program of regular activities including music, exercise and hobbies to help keep residents active, engaged and independent.

Autumna has invited care providers to evidence the infection control measures they are carrying out, above and beyond those laid out by the government, in order to keep residents, staff and visitors safe.

What we're doing to keep residents & visitors safe

The Elms has been independently assessed and received advice on its infection control procedures by both the regulator CQC and Public Health England.

The Elms ensures all staff who have not tested positive for Covid are rapid tested in advance of their shifts and also undergo a PCR lab test once per week.

The Elms maintains a rigorous cleaning regime of both detergent and chlorine-based products on all high-touch areas three times daily within the home.

Our Building and Facilities

The Elms is a relatively small care home with 19 bedrooms and this helps our team of carers develop a real feeling of family amongst all the residents. Constructed as a sprawling rectangular bungalow surrounding an open air courtyard in the middle, all the rooms and hallways are level so there are no stairs to navigate which helps ensure safety from falls. Our dining area is situated at the front of the home to enjoy the morning and midday sun and has a ‘country cottage’ feel.  Our library and large lounge areas provide truly stunning views across rolling Somerset countryside. In the warmer summer months, residents enjoy doing a bit of gardening in the sun trap of our courtyard or simply relaxing on the back deck.

Description

Here at The Elms, what sets us apart is the caring environment that we’ve developed and nurtured over the years.  It starts with a simple philosophy…  We believe that happy staff equals happy residents.

We have been fortunate to attract and retain an extremely committed group of people who are genuinely passionate about caring for the elderly.  Together, they work as a strong, close-knit team and demand high standards of themselves and of one another.

Day to day, our staff live and breathe our five core values which are:

  1. I make every day a great day
  2. My enthusiasm is infectious
  3. Laughter is the best medicine
  4. Honesty is the only policy
  5. You can always count on me

The Team

The Elms care team numbers about 25 and includes a range of skills and experience - from carers to cooks to cleaners to activity and administrative staff.  Our staff are required to maintain their levels of competency through ongoing training which is delivered both online and via practical courses.  The Elms operates a keyworker system with care staff dedicated to specific residents.  This means taking plenty of time to understand individual residents, their likes and dislikes, and exploring all the ways we can make them happy and comfortable.

Hi, my name is Anita and I have worked in the care sector for approximately 14 years, the last 5 of which have been here at The Elms. I am level 3 qualified and I am currently working towards my level 4 qualification. I am one of the Care Managers and I enjoy every minute of my job and still do! We are situated in a rural location with beautiful views that our residents all enjoy. We have a lovely working relationship with our residents and enjoy reminiscing about their past experiences and having a laugh. Here at The Elms I'm proud to say we provide top quality care and compassion for all of our residents and we always ensure all their needs are met.

What does good care mean to me?

To me it means treating residents as individuals.  Everyone is different after all.  And to give them the best care and attention as required.  I've worked here for more than 10 years now and I have to say it really has a warm and friendly atmosphere.

How do you help make The Elms a special place for the residents?

I'd like to think it is by just being there spending time with them and listening to their stories.  I try to be helpful as much as required.  We have lots of activities and events taking place so I just join in with everyone and have a laugh!
