Meet The Manager

Jacqui Harris is General manager at St John's Court.

I began my career in care as I had a passion for helping others and wanting to make a difference. I started as a care assistant and progressed into management through developing my skills and knowledge. My aim to provide excellent care alongside encouraging my team to be the best they can be. I have undertaken many courses including a Dementia Championship completed in conjunction with the University of Bradford. I have managed many residential/ nursing homes, supported homes as an area support manager and most recently commissioned a New Build 80 bedded home.

In my spare time I like to run, listen to music, read, walk, garden and explore.

St John’s Court is an impressive Victorian Grade II listed building overlooking the restful town of Bromsgrove. At one time the vicarage to St John’s Church, the property itself has a rich and storied history. Having first been transformed into council offices, it evolved into a care home during the 1900s.

Today it plays host to 44 residents, all of whom receive care classed as ‘outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission. On October 23rd 2019, St John's retained its 'Outstanding' rating from CQC

When faced with the difficult decision of placing a loved one into care, it helps to know their new surroundings are both homely and conducive to assisted living. St John’s certainly fits that bill, forming part of Amica Care’s wider commitment to supporting families through the onset of dementia.

Description

At the heart of it all is our quality team of nurses and carers that really make the difference.  Recruitment and training are key to creating a successful team.  We recruit, employ and retain the best and irrespective of their time in care, they all complete our mandatory training programme based on best practice techniques.  This gives our team confidence to improve which in turn gives confidence to our residents, and their families, that they are being cared for by the best.

Activities Are So Important

Our residents are encouraged to live as actively as possible and we achieve this by creating a mix of activities that will appeal to every taste and reflect different requirements and abilities.

We develop stimulating activities both in the home and outside.  Some of these take the form of away-days and trips into the community, allowing residents to savour some of Bromsgrove’s best-loved attractions.  We have strong links with the local community and St John’s Court is well known within the area. For example, we have built a relationship with the nearby Bromsgrove School where the students are encouraged to visit our residents and take part in activities themselves – our residents love spending time with the children.  This helps to create and retain a spirit of community.

We delight in arts and crafts, music therapy, games and exercise to improve mobility, social interaction and mental stimulation.  We have found that exercise is key to staying strong which in turn helps to prevent falls, whilst having fun.

We have an OMI Table for interactive games and quizzes which is suitable for people living with or without dementia.  A 3D Printer, Smart TVs which we use for all denominations of religion, video calling, karaoke, quizzes etc.

It is of course, all down to individual preferences and some of our residents prefer smaller activities on a one to one basis with our dedicated Activities team and the carers.
