Meet The Manager

Kerry King is Home Manager at Pengover.

In 2011 I returned to Cornwall Care as a senior care staff member. The role was challenging and rewarding, giving me the opportunity to work in a field that I have always loved. As I grew into my role an opportunity to become an interim Deputy Manager came up. I applied and was successful. Working closely with the Manager, I learnt more skills to ensure clients, staff and family members felt valued and respected.

I remained in the role of Deputy for three years, during this time I completed my ILM level 5. This opportunity gave me insight into Management style and leadership styles. In 2017 I applied for and was successful in the role as registered Manager.

I am passionate about, the clients we care for, the staff we support and the families that visit their loved ones.

I believe that Pengover is a home, not only for the clients we care for but also staff, family members and visitors.

We are the largest care provider in Cornwall. We are a not-for-profit organisation and a registered charity, giving practical assistance for all types of care. We offer residential, nursing and dementia care in our 16 care homes.

"We believe in going above and beyond offering high quality care, going that extra mile to improve lives every day."

Pengover is a 36 bed nursing home for people in need of dementia care. We care for our residents 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and we like to believe that we perform a little magic here. Our staff promote independence and understand different illnesses. They are highly trained, professional and passionate about their roles and the lives of our residents. Our lovely home is located in the ancient market town of Liskeard and we would love for you to see it. Visitors are welcome any time.

When visiting our homes, please understand that we have a friendly open door policy, we welcome visits to our homes and will do our best to always accommodate unplanned visits. However, we ask that you understand our homes can be very busy in the mornings and we may be supporting our clients, so unplanned visits may require a short waiting period for a staff member to show you around. We will offer you a seat and a cup of tea whilst you wait.

Our Building and Facilities

Pengover is set in the ancient market town of Liskeard, 20 miles west of Plymouth. Built for the comfort and wellbeing of the people we care for, our lovely home is surrounded by large, safe gardens that were originally designed by our residents. The gardens are wheelchair friendly with level lawns and pathways, which can be accessed at any time. There are also three large conservatories and four lounges, where our residents can enjoy sitting down with a good book, taking part in our scheduled activities, or taking a little nap in the afternoon sun.

Our home is relaxed and comfortable, designed around the residents that live here. Pengover is one of several care homes owned and operated by Cornwall Care, a not-for-profit charity and the largest provider of care homes in the county. Cornwall Care has a reputation for genuine and loving care for residents and we at Pengover are proud to share that. Our aim at Pengover is to provide the very best care possible in a supportive, dignified and caring environment.

Description

At Cornwall Care we ensure that our staff are supported. We know how important it is to understand our residents and their illnesses, particularly dementia and mental health, which can often be misunderstood, so we make sure that all our staff are trained in dementia care and ethics.

We are nationally recommended and awarded for our training and career development. Our aim as a team is to provide loving support for all our residents, promoting awareness, safety and most important of all, individuality.

At Pengover we offer nursing care and support for people with dementia. By combining a professional approach with a firm focus on the individuality of every person who lives with us, we really get to know our residents and develop a relationship with them that is based on understanding and empathy. Our staff are all passionate about the work that they do.

When residents join us at Pengover, the first thing that we do is develop a comprehensive care plan with them, setting out the care we aim to provide and how we will achieve this. We assess this plan on a continual basis, working with the resident to ensure that their needs are met. Care is available for our residents 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Visitors are always welcome.

Deputy Manager

I began my career in 2001, initially this was as work experience and I joined the kitchen team. After a successful work experience I decided that I would like to give more to the clients and began my career in care.

Over the years I’ve worked hard, I’ve had several roles including Health care assistant level 2 and in a more senior role as a Health care assistant level 3. During this time I also returned to university and completed a degree in Psychology. An opportunity became available in 2017 to become Deputy Manager, I have learnt so much over the years and feel this has helped me adapt to my current role. I’m looking forward to completing my ILM which commences in 2020.

Pengover is like my extended family, I’m passionate about Pengover and Cornwall Care and look forward to many more years learning and developing within the company.

The Importance Of Meal Times

Meals and mealtimes are a very important part of our daily lives and it is vital for our health and wellbeing that the experience is a positive one.

We pride ourselves on the quality of our catering and the range of choice available to our residents daily. We promote individual wellbeing through a positive, enjoyable dining experience in pleasant settings and support our residents to eat and drink, so they are well-hydrated and well-nourished.

Within Cornwall Care our Chefs provide healthy, nutritious, wholesome food. We source local ingredients and cook fresh every day. Clients are offered their preferred choice and likes, dislikes, dietary needs and cultural preferences are always catered for.

We also understand the importance of having an enjoyable eating experience - whether that means fresh flowers on the table, food from childhood, eating alone or eating with friends - we try to provide experiences that suit each individual, catering for their personal needs.

Activities Are So Important

Individuality and freedom are important to us; at Pengover there are many lovely spaces that are ideal for reading, relaxing, watching films or television, pursuing activities or having conversations with friends and relatives. It is entirely up to our residents how they wish to spend their time, whether that means flicking through a magazine or getting out in the grounds for a bit of gardening, they have their own choices. Residents and their families are encouraged to suggest activities and entertainment for the home, to take part in our events and get involved, but ultimately, it is completely up to them.
