Meet The Manager

Marta Szemborska is Home Manager at Ivybank House Care Home.

Marta Szemborska

A real home has as much personality as the people who live there. That’s why we’ve made Ivybank House a place you’d be proud of and happy to live in – just as you would your own home.

Set amongst the beautiful grounds and with lovely views of the surrounding countryside, Ivybank House Care Home is a warm and inviting residence located in the hills above the city of Bath. There is so much going on here, from reading groups to a weekly visit from local nursery children. We also take local community trips to the theatre, Longleat, the Zoo and have our own mini-bus for excursions and shopping trips.

The house is situated in an affluent residential area and has fabulous views of Bath city centre in the distance. There are some nice pubs nearby and a park not too far away. With the city centre on our doorstep, Ivybank House Care Home is in an excellent location.

The house was a former Edwardian residence and is tastefully converted to include an extension with a more modern wing.

On the ground floor there is a lounge and dining room with a patio area. On the first floor there’s a hairdressing salon, another lounge and a conservatory, meaning peace and quiet are never far away.

We offer brighterkind care – a person-centred approach that is delivered through quality care, recreation and activities, and food and dining.

We have 40 bedrooms set across two floors with several suites and we can accommodate husband and wife couples. We’ve got a real mix of rooms from smaller non en-suites and medium-sized rooms with two-piece en-suites to large suites with wet room facilities. We think carefully about the type of room each resident needs. Some of our rooms offer patio doors onto our gardens. Room with a view? Many of our rooms have great views over the Bath valley or over our gardens.

All our rooms are furnished to the highest specifications with your comfort in mind. Your bedroom furniture consists of: an appropriate bed suitable to your needs, wardrobe, chest of drawers, bedside chest, a desk, a television, easy chair and a visitor’s chair. All our bedrooms have been recently decorated in our refurbishment programme.

We understand that moving into Ivybank House will be a considerable transition, but one we try to make feel as easy as possible. We’re a diverse Group, from different backgrounds and with different roles, but we all have something fundamental in common – every single one of us is passionate about care. A positive team culture makes a real difference to the quality of care provided to individuals living in our home. Residents can be confident that they will see familiar faces every day as many of our team celebrate well over 5 years service with us. We are proud that many of our team are celebrating well over 5 years service at Ivybank Care Home. Our senior care team have been with us since 2014 and are supported by our Head Chef (over 13yrs long service), our administrator and receptionist started with us in 2008 and 2005 respectively, one of our activities ladies started working at Ivybank in 2007 and one of our night carers has been with us since 2009.

From our Home Manager, Olivia Butler, Deputy Manager and the care team to our chefs and receptionists, we are always on hand to help, but with enough empathy to know when to leave you be. We're people who don’t have favourites, and who are always busy creating the little moments of kindness that make a real difference to life here.

As well as our team of carers, district nurses visit the home daily and GPs weekly, and are on call to provide services, should they be needed at any time.

Care Homes no longer work on 'staff ratios'. brighterkind homes take pride in providing a higher level of personalised care for all our residents and have in place a suitably qualified, competent and skilled team to meet people’s care and treatment needs. Your Home Manager will discuss the level of care you require before you move in.

When you arrive at Ivybank House, we will work with you to develop a personalised care plan that will include everything from your hobbies, exercise, and dietary preferences, to any health issues you might have. It will determine the level and type of care you receive. This can vary from minimal residential care to full support.

We aim not to use any agency staff. Our team members are passionate and caring and the majority have been with us for well over 5 years with some celebrating 10yrs or more service at the home. Team members take on specialist training, for example some specialise in end of life / palliative care.

Ivybank has lots going on. We are rightly proud of our activities programme which takes into account the residents we are currently caring for, their interests and wishes. The programme involves lots of variety from gardening to music, theatre to shopping trips. We even have a cat called Ivy at the home.

We provide a safe and homely place to live. Whether you are frail, at risk of falls or need a little rest and relaxation after an operation such as a hip or knee replacement, Ivybank might be just the place for you. We have a lively, chatty community where you can make friends and continue enjoying life or regain your joie de vivre!

Don’t worry, if your needs or preferences change, we’ll change your care plan too.

The Importance Of Meal Times

At Ivybank House, we love our food. We firmly believe that when you eat well, you live well too. This is a core part of our brighterkind philosophy of care, centring on good nutrition and the importance of mealtimes as a social occasion.

Each day our chef prepares restaurant-style meals combining variety with a balanced diet and an emphasis on locally sourced ingredients. Our residents get involved in helping to plan our menus, too. And we can cater to any dietary or health requirements, however complex.

There is a large dining room on the ground floor – it’s a space that always becomes a hub of conversation and laughter, and which gives all our residents a chance to come together and socialise. Whether it’s tea and cakes in the garden or a special menu to celebrate an event like the World Cup, we encourage our residents to make the most of living in an active and friendly environment. We also go out for a pub lunch each week, which is always very popular.

Of course, when, where and who you eat with is entirely up to you. Friends and family can join you as often as you’d like (at a small charge), and our extras menu gives you the option to order snacks at any time of the day.

Activities Are So Important

A willingness to get involved and try new things is something we see time and again, once people are given the opportunity. We have two recreation and activities staff who coordinate everything, but all our staff regularly brainstorm new ideas, too. And our residents vote on their suggestions at our regular activity meetings, so we can be sure everyone’s looking forward to something, every day.

Activities vary each week: from bingo and a pub lunch every week to arts and crafts, cheese and wine evenings and entertainment by local musicians. And everything’s flexible. If it’s sunny we try and get outside, so everyone can appreciate the best of the day.

Technology has opened up the world for us here; keeping our residents connected and stimulated. From meeting a great-grandchild for the first time on Skype, to a live virtual tour of an art exhibition in Copenhagen, we make sure everyone gets exactly what they want from it – and it’s something we plan on using more and more.

We’ve built excellent links to the community, allowing residents to continue their lives outside the home with ease. We have our own transport and regularly take trips to the local shops and cafes, garden centres and local churches.

Every brighterkind home now has a Magic Moments Club which provides a vast range of activities and fun things to do that are open to all of our residents:
