Meet The Manager

Phil Toomer-Smith is Acting General Manager at Edgbaston Beaumont.

Hi, my name is Phil, and I am the acting general manager here at Edgbaston Beaumont. Welcome to our website!

I was born and raised in Birmingham and know the West Midlands very well. I trained at Wolverhampton University and qualified as a nurse in 2009.

I have experience in medical, surgical, trauma and intensive care nursing. My role of acting general manager will require me to maintain high quality care standards, promote independent living and ensure that person-centered care is delivered. I have a very strong clinical team who will ensure that the residents of Edgbaston Beaumont live well.

Barchester has supported me in completing a BSc in Nursing at Dundee University, and I am now being supported to complete an LL.M in Healthcare Law and Ethics, again based at Dundee University.

I enjoy working with older adults, supporting staff training and working with families to ensure that residents live well.

Phil Toomer-Smith

Here at the Edgbaston Beaumont, we provide a range of accommodation and services, from luxury apartments for independent living, to the main house, which offers 24-hour nursing care. Having only 30 residents, the home is very small and has a distinctly personal and homely feel. Our highly skilled and compassionate staff work hard to provide a quality, personalised service to each resident.

All of our independent living properties are self-contained and residents have the option of taking advantage of the additional care and support services available in the main home, including meals and participation in activities. Edgbaston Beaumont supports an independent, socially active lifestyle, with the added reassurance that our care assistants are close at hand should you need them.

Located near to New Street Station, the Bullring and Harborne, Edgbaston Beaumont has easy access to local amenities and excellent transports links. When organising day trips, we are conveniently located close to the Botanical Gardens, Cannon Hill Park, theatres and shops, and the infamous Cadbury World. Yet despite its convenient city centre location, the Edgbaston Beaumont is set in beautiful leafy gardens, and is very quiet and peaceful.

Amie Mabley
Care Assistant

Hi, my name is Amie, and I have worked at Edgbaston Beaumont as a Care Assistant since 2011. I love my job and enjoy each and every moment that I get to spend with residents, building up fantastic relationships with them and their family and their loved ones. Barchester offers us the chance to undergo advanced training, which would allow us to provide better support to residents.

Phil Davies

Head Chef

I started working here at Edgbaston over 10 years ago as the weekend chef and immediately decided that this was the place I wanted to settle, and was promoted to Head Chef over 5 years ago. I am responsible for the day-to-day operation of the kitchen and restaurant, including training, ordering and menu planning, and finding out about residents' likes and dislikes. Often, after lunch, you will find me chatting to residents and visitors to get some feedback about the food and services we deliver. Individual nutrition and dietary needs are very important to me and I take great pride in knowing that the food we serve helps to improve residents' well-being here at the home. I also love catering for parties and special occasions.

Second Chef

I have been the Second Chef at Edgbaston Beaumont since 2006, joining the Barchester family after completing my training at the Barchester Chef Academy when I arrived from South Africa.

I am fondly known at Edgbaston as 'The Mary Berry of the Beaumont'. My passion and unique talent for baking delicious cakes and sweets for my residents every day is passed down from my grandmother, who was affectionately known as 'Mary Sweet', and I know each and every day she looks down on me with a big smile, knowing that I am using her baking recipes to provide those who live here with a selection of homemade treats every day.

The Importance Of Meal Times

We have a dedicated, motivated and experienced catering team here at Edgbaston Beaumont, who strive to deliver a fantastic array of both delicious and nourishing food. We cater for all individual dietary needs, like and dislikes. We also love putting on a party and special events where you will find our assistant chef busy creating beautiful cakes and sweet temptations. For a taste of what we offer please contact us for a show around and then join us for lunch or alternatively you can look at some of our sample menus below.

For residents that have difficulties in swallowing we modify the menu of the day so that is it a soft, palatable dish.  To support our chefs in producing these dishes, our hospitality and Chef Academy organises theory and practical workshops.  Working in partnership with Nutricia, our practical workshops involve all chefs and deputy managers learning about dysphagia and producing these modified menus. The chefs work with the chef trainer to prepare fork mashable and thick puree meals to the correct consistency, taste and presentation.  The deputy managers can then ensure all modified menus served are presented correctly for our residents.

Our chefs are recruited on the basis of an interview with the regional hospitality support team and the manager for the home. Selection also involves a practical element where potential cooks are asked to cook for and meet a panel of people living in the home. Chefs take their job extremely seriously and our annual Chef competition sees our chefs battle it out in regional heats and then at a national final for the accolade of 'Barchester's Chef of the Year'.
