Older Persons Shared Ownership (OPSO) is a government-backed scheme designed to help older adults get onto the property ladder by allowing them to buy a share of a home while paying rent on the remaining portion. Under OPSO, you can purchase between 10% and 75% of a property’s market value, with the exact initial share depending on the type of lease. Unlike standard shared ownership, OPSO limits ownership to a maximum of 75%, but once you reach this threshold, you no longer pay rent on the remaining share. 2.75% rent payable on remaining share.
OPSO is aimed at individuals aged 55 and over who have an annual household income of £80,000 or less (£90,000 in London), do not own another home (or will sell it before moving), and cannot afford to buy a suitable home on the open market. It provides a more accessible route to homeownership for older people looking to downsize or move to a home that better suits their needs.
