Meet The Manager

Helen Cooke is General Manager at Cedar Mews.

My whole purpose is ensuring this remains a beautiful home caring for all our residents, family and friends, living with frailty, memory loss, loneliness and guilt. I am unable to adequately express the joy that my team and I feel through meeting, caring and positively contributing towards individuals' lives being fulfilled and happy, here and in our local community.

I trained as a Nurse in 1981, then moved into social care where I have remained ever since. My experience includes working with children, older frail people, people living with learning difficulties, dementia and end of life care. I take pride in leading teams, homes and companies for 36 years without a break and I’ve loved every minute.

I’m married with 3 grown up sons and athough I have had many years of professional, hands-on experience, nothing compares to when when my lovely mum and dad had difficulties with  memory loss and a stroke.

Connectivity for resident testing, monitoring & communications

Infection control and the safety of both residents and staff often requires quarantine measures and the isolation of care home residents. To test, monitor and allow residents to communicate with relatives, the prevalence of room-level connectivity within the home is becoming increasingly relevant.

Description

It’s all about you. Our personalised care plans are shaped around the needs of each individual we look after – everything from the meals you enjoy to the hobbies you love and your personal routines.

Whether you need simple support with daily activities such as mobility, washing or dressing, or more specialised care, our compassionate team are always on hand to assist you, and offer reassurance and advice to family members.

We have a high ratio of carers to residents, and because we equip our care teams with new technology that allows them to update daily care records instantly, they can devote more time to getting to know residents’ personalities, preferences and concerns, as well listening and responding to your or your loved one’s needs.

Cedar Mews is a beautiful home filled with beautiful people. Helen and I work together with our compassionate team to care for residents and their families. We are all dedicated to making sure our residents live happy, fulfilled and enriched lives. Our team is determined to be the difference in senior care.

I qualified as a mental health nurse in 1984. I have dedicated my 33-year career to people living with dementia, people with frailty and palliative care for the elderly. I strive to make a difference to individuals, and embrace residents and colleagues alike with my caring, enthusiastic and tireless attitude.

I have three children and I’m very proud of what they have achieved. I love my pets – two dogs and three cats. I have fostered hedgehogs for five years. I have always nurtured and cared for people and I will continue to do what I do best.

I  help families and potential residents make an easy, stress free decision about coming into care. I aim to enable residents to settle and be a part of our community, giving families peace of mind that their loved one is being looked after, cared for and pampered!  I really enjoy spending time with our residents and their families, and making their time with us enjoyable and meaningful.

I have 2 girls and family is really important to me. I love spending time with them whether lazing in front of the TV or on an adventure! My mother-in-law was diagnosed with dementia at 50 and passed away at 58. She lived next door to us and my wife was, her carer for a time so I know the devastation it causes and my experience allows me to be supportive and understanding.

Oh, I also love cars, golf, football and the odd glass of good Rioja!!

Administrator

It’s a privilege to be the Administrator here at Cedar Mews. I provide administrative support to all of our home’s departments, our residents and their families. I joined in January 2017 and it’s been fantastic to see our home grow and to be a part of that experience.

I’ve worked as an Administrator in a care home setting for almost five years now. Prior to that, I gained many years’ experience in Administration and Customer Services.

I like to spend my spare time with my fantastic family and friends or taking a relaxing break at our caravan.

The Importance Of Meal Times

We wouldn’t call our food restaurant standard because we aim for something more personal. At Cinnamon we believe in delicious, home-cooked food, attentive service and understanding what each resident enjoys. Every meal we serve has to be something we’d be proud to present to our nearest and dearest at a special family gathering.

Our restaurant menu evolves with the changing seasons and tastes of our residents who help to plan each meal by offering our chefs feedback and ideas. From the quality of the fresh, locally sourced ingredients and nutritional balance to the attractive presentation, we’re there to listen and make sure that each meal feels like something special, not an afterthought.

Relax and enjoy yourself in our sociable residents’ dining rooms or take an active part preparing food in our life skill kitchens. Enjoy a healthy snack in the comfort of your en-suite room. Catch up with guests or fellow residents over a tasty treat in our comfortable lounges and cheery cafés. And if you’re hungry later on, there’s always a selection of fruit, snacks and hot and cold drinks to enjoy.

Activities Are So Important

Every month, our dedicated Activities Team offers hundreds of imaginative, original activities that are carefully tailored to match each resident’s interests and abilities. We use life history assessments and other specialist techniques to distil specific information about each individual’s passions. Then we design a fully rounded programme of physical activities, mental stimulation, creative pursuits and social events that is certain to enrich their life and add extra fun.

Our luxury residential care homes are alive with the sound of music, whether it’s from one of our many visiting musical entertainers or our residents’ voices uplifted in karaoke or a sing-along. Popular ‘ZING!’ seated exercise classes help to keep residents limber, and music therapy with hand-held instruments improves co-ordination.

We have fun and games every day, from traditional word games, quizzes and board games to original games devised by our Activities Team to keep our residents in touch with modern life. Cooking, baking, and arts and crafts sessions ensure that our residents continue to express their creativity. Flower arranging and gardening – in groups, with local schoolchildren or tabletop gardening all year round – keep our residents connected with the great outdoors.

We hold lively parties at least once a month, often based on a theme drawn from our calendar of national and international celebrations, such as Spanish Day. Wimbledon, for example, becomes much more than a spectator sport. We offer a programme of entertainment throughout the fortnight that includes our own residents’ balloon tennis tournament, and endless opportunities to enjoy strawberries and cream. Families and friends are also invited.

Dedicated private transport enables our residents to get out and about for a change of scene. Whether it’s a theatre matinee, a day at the seaside, a boat trip or simply a visit to familiar places to reminisce, every outing and entertainment is designed to keep our residents feeling energised, active, connected and happy.
