Meet The Manager

Rachael Dunn is Registered Manager, pending registration at Capricorn Cottage.

Over the past 13 years of working in Health and Social Care, I have worked with adults with learning disabilities in a variety of environments, ranging from community-based services and one to one packages of care.

I joined Capricorn Cottage’s team in 2019 and have progressed through a number of different management roles, until recently being promoted to the position of the Registered Manager.

I enjoy working with people and making a difference, ensuring to reflect our Core Principles: Respect, Dignity, and Independence.

My philosophy is to drive forward a person-centred approach, embedding an ethos that puts the person we support at the centre of all decisions made, thus enabling people we support to have greater choice, control, and autonomy over their lives.

Capricorn Cottage comprises 34 bedrooms, including 17 en-suites rooms, for people with Learning Disabilities, located in the beautiful countryside on the outskirts of Fleet in Lincolnshire.

RESIDENTIAL

We strive to bring the highest standard of care to enhance the quality of people’s lives. We are committed to delivering person-centred, flexible support that promotes choice, dignity, respect and control.

Our ‘round the clock’ team consist of support and senior support staff, housekeepers, laundry assistant, activity, catering and maintenance staff.

​We are conscious that all individuals regardless of their degree of ability have the same value and rights as everyone else and we promote independence whenever possible.

RESPITE

We offer a unique respite service within the area, as we are not a traditional respite service provider. We work with people with a wide range of needs from a variety of different backgrounds. Being responsive to finding innovative support, we provide care solutions specifically tailored to the individual.

The team are committed to working with people in a person-centred approach to enhance their quality of life while finding opportunities for people to maintain and develop new skills, based solely on how they choose to live their lives.

We are not a ‘one size fits all’ respite service, working proactively with people. We can adapt and change the support required at every stage of a person’s stay with us.

COMPLEX NEEDS SERVICE

We can provide bespoke support for people with complex needs, learning disabilities, and those who have a range of additional needs, including mental health and behaviour that is seen as challenging.

We offer accommodation across different service types, these being 'Rose Cottage', 'The Squirrels' and individual accommodation to meet people's needs.

Together we create a personalised support plan focusing on your interests and skills.

Autumna has invited care providers to evidence the infection control measures they are carrying out, above and beyond those laid out by the government, in order to keep residents, staff and visitors safe.

What we're doing to keep residents & visitors safe

All staff complete a lateral flow test before coming to work every day, and also undertake a PCR test weekly.  After several days off or a holiday all staff undertake a PCR test before coming back to work.

We offer virtual visits via Skype and Facetime, as well as Zoom and other media formats for families to see their relatives.

Our Building and Facilities

We are situated in pleasant gardens, surrounded by tranquil countryside, with lovely views across the landscape. There are walks & raised garden beds to join in tending if wished.

We have regular meetings for People We Support and Family to give opportunity for you (and your family) to bring forward any ideas for the environment, food, activities and other things that are important to you, plus any suggestions or concerns.

We have Wi-Fi throughout the home, a telephone for Family and friends to call, but if you prefer private phone, Wi-Fi and sky tv please let us know and these will be billed directly. Laundry will be washed and ironed but please bring them clearly labelled, we can arrange labelling which incurs a small charge.

You can use The Hive throughout the day - whenever you wish -to have a chat or hold a review, somewhere different to take your family or when you just want to enjoy the garden and have some peace and quiet.

Description

Prior to your admission, a comprehensive assessment will be undertaken. 

This assessment will form the basis of your care plan which sets out your needs and how they will be met at Capricorn Cottage. You will be fully involved in this process and the plan will set out your individual preferences and the decisions that you have made about how you would like to be cared for. You will also be asked to complete a My Story which looks at what you’ve enjoyed in the past and the things that are important to you today.

Elements of your care plan will be available in your room and we would encourage you and your family to read it and let us know if we need to make some changes to it.

Your care plan will be reviewed with you monthly or more often if your needs change.

Doctors from local practices visit Capricorn Cottage. Staff will liaise with the GP of your choice along with other health professionals such as dieticians, dentists and physiotherapists to provide good quality health care.

Regular visits are undertaken in the home by chiropodists, opticians and hairdressers. If you would like to make an appointment please ask the senior member of staff on duty. Alternatively, staff will make the appointment on your behalf when needed. There will be a small charge for hairdressing appointments.

We can look after all or part of your medication for you. If you wish to retain control of your medication this will be discussed with you and will form part of your care plan.

You will have a Key Worker who will support you to make sure that you have all you need in terms of toiletries and clothing, to remember special occasions and help you to personalise your room.

We work hard to make sure that we employ staff with the right qualities.

You can be involved in the interview process. If interviewing is something that you would be interested in taking part in, please let us know.

All new staff receive induction and training which is relevant to their role. If they are new to care, they are supported to complete the Care Certificate. If they have experience in care, we still expect them to complete some aspects of the care Certificate. We make sure that staff know what our expectations are and we are fully committed to training and supporting staff to develop and access additional qualifications.

We have a full set of policies and procedures that staff adhere to.

The home is staffed on a 24-hour basis and staffing levels are regularly reviewed to ensure that they continue to meet your needs.

The manager undertakes many audits of the care and the environment and we may seek your views as part of this audit.

Regular site inspections are undertaken by Spyros Alexopoulos to ensure that the care being delivered is of a high standard and that the environment continues to be maintained and improved. During these inspections, they observe the care practices and speak to people about what it is like to live at Capricorn Cottage. In addition, the manager submits a monthly report to them.

At regular intervals, we send out surveys to people living in Capricorn Cottage as well as family members and visiting professionals. We ask them what they think of the service that is provided and we act on any suggestions to improve the service.

People we support and family meetings are held quarterly and we will let you and your family know when the next one will be held. There will be an opportunity for you to let us know what you think and put forward any suggestions for future changes.

Lincolnshire County Council also make regular monitoring visits to the home to make
sure that we are maintaining the required standards.

I have worked in Adult Social Care for over 30 years. I spent over 20 years within a Local Authority, and the past 10 years in the private sector, mainly with adults with a learning disability, complex needs, Autism, and behaviour that can be seen as challenging. 

I am a qualified Social Worker, and have undertaken a number of different roles such as Registered Manager, Director, Operational Manager, Deputy Head of Residential Services and Area Manager.

Activities Are So Important

The home has dedicated staff who will talk to you about what you enjoy doing as it is important that our programmes incorporate your skills and areas of interest. We will get to know you and work with you to complete a My Story book which looks at your interests and any new skills that you wish to learn as well as your dreams and aspirations for the future.

We will work with you to promote your independence and involvement in the daily life of the home and the community. This is very important to all of us.

There is an on-going in-house programme of activities and a copy of this is attached. Please let us know if there are other things you would like to do.

We are also sourcing additional services like manicures and personal fitness programmes, we are working hard to establish a base of volunteers to support you with gardening and other activities that are important to you. The home has access to a minibus which can accommodate wheelchairs and regular outings are arranged.

Newspapers/Magazines can be provided and these are invoiced directly. The Reverend from Fleet Baptist Church visits us monthly. If you have specific religious needs, please let staff know so we can identify the local group and support you to attend or receive visits.

Quarterly newsletters are produced providing updates on the life in the home and any developments. You will be given the opportunity to contribute to this.
