Meet The Manager

Kim Whelan is General Manager at Newlands.

I have worked for Barchester since January 2019. I relocated here to Workington from County Durham. I have been a registered nurse since 1982, and I have worked predominantly in the social sector in nursing and care homes. I have a special interest in working with people who are living with dementia.

Here at Newlands, we endeavour to enhance the lives of all of our residents. We are proud of the care we offer and would be delighted to show you around our home.

Kim Whelan

Moving into a nursing home can be a difficult time for both potential residents and their families. Here at Newlands Care Centre we strive to aim to reduce that stress through the unique home from home approach we offer. We encourage residents and their families to bring home comforts to Newlands to make the move more comfortable. Our home is surrounded by lovely gardens, we are a stones throw away from the beautiful Lake District and its scenery. We are supported through a highly skilled nursing team and Clinical Care Team, and encompassed with other dedicated departments who are all focused on the caring support of the residents. We offer nursing care for residents who require support with physical health concerns, dementia care and other specialist mental health needs. We are proud of our strong links with other community professionals and community links including the Alzheimer's Society and local Schools.

The Importance Of Meal Times

Our catering team within Newlands Care Centre offer a very home from home approach to the menu choices we provide. We are highly motivated in ensuring we accommodate resident preferences, specialised diets and nutritional needs. Our chefs hold regular nutritional meetings and these include the residents themselves, discussing meal choices and alternative menus. All our meals are cooked fresh each day within the home utilising local produce. All of our delicious cakes and desserts are made by our talented chefs and snacks and varied drinks are available throughout the day and night.

We provide themed days and evenings to encourage families to be a part of the home, from Fish and Chip Suppers for residents to "Tattie Pot" Nights. We are very proud to also offer a unique approach with our 'Resident of the Day' scheme. This enables each resident on a monthly basis, to not only feel that 'extra bit special' but request their most favourable meal for that day, whether this be a salad or a sirloin steak. Here at Newlands Care Centre we strive to deliver the person centred care approach and if there is nothing of choice you prefer on the menu please just request for the chef to discuss any alternative options you would require.

Activities Are So Important

Activities within our home are tailored around the requests of the residents. Our Activities Coordinator holds regular activity meetings with the residents and staff to seek new thoughts and ideas. The home is committed to offering a varied range of activities for all residents from hand and nail care to gardening for those who have green fingers. We carry out reminiscence activities including planned entertainment days utilisng our PoDs, bringing the seaside into the home or a Dance Hall evening. We are proud to be part of the OOMPH Organisation, which offers upper and lower limb exercises to music, we have strong links with the local library offering visual and audio books for residents to enjoy.

We hold strong links with the community, especially schools and local children's sports teams who visit the home to provide entertainment and engagement with residents. We also maintain relationships with the church to ensure that residents spiritual beliefs are met. Externally we have our own mini bus and outings are planned and carried out again tailored to residents preferences, whether it be a shopping, visit to the local pub, tea and coffee afternoons or a scenic day out in the lakes and lovely countryside that surrounds us. However the fun does not just stop at the residents we care for but we also hold family nights for example our Pie and Pea Suppers, and various fayres throughout the year.
