Meet The Manager

Penny Hammond is General Manager at Leah Lodge Care Home.

As a general nurse, I did a bit of everything. After a short spell in the private sector in Harley Street, I joined Pontins as the camp nurse.
While working as an agency nurse I joined the team in Newham on a medical ward. It was an 8-year journey, the ward became a bit of a specialist unit for the young people who had illnesses related to aids.
After a couple of years as a district nurse, I accepted a general managers role in a care home. I am now in my 5th General Manager role, and still enjoying the challenges every day brings. Dementia care has been a real part of my personal journey, and I was privileged to care for very young people with dementia aged 34 to 65 in a previous care home.
Joining the team at Leah Lodge is a great place to be. The cinnamon care settings are amazing and I look forward to enjoying the people who live and work in the Leah Lodge community and being part of a team who really make a difference to the people they care for.

My role is to support residents and families who are looking for a care home for their loved one.  This journey usually choice or by necessity is often a difficult one.  I feel very privileged that this is my job as I get a great deal of satisfaction from helping people in any way I can.I joined the team at Rectory Court in April 2019. Having worked in a similar role for the past four years. Originally I was an Estate Agent before I moved into the care / retirement sector in 2015 and have honestly never looked back.I am from Wirral in Cheshire where I worked for a corporate estate agent for most of my working life with some time in banking.  In 2015 myself and my husband relocated to Essex due to an opportunity we couldn’t miss, later moving to SE London to be closer to family just before we got married and had our son in 2018.  When I am not in work I like to make the most of quality time with my husband and son.

My job involves promoting our Homes, carrying out show-rounds, preparing the necessary paperwork, being the point of contact for relatives and residents and ensuring that everyone is happy.
I love my job and it draws all of my previous work experience together. In recent years, I have been a live-in manager at an independent living retirement development and was responsible for 96 flats of residents over the age of 60. This was a very challenging job and after 18 months I left to fulfil a lifelong dream of travelling the World.
When I returned from my travels, I worked for 3 months as “bank staff” for the NHS, based at the Community Mental Health Team in Sittingbourne.
My journey from home to works takes just 7 minutes and I am really enjoying being back in South East London, where I was born and living close to my family and friends.
In my spare time, I enjoy yoga, walks with my dog (Mrs Doyle), DIY and anything creative, so I love arts and crafts too.

I am overjoyed to be part of the Leah Lodge team. I am really excited to watch this home be successful and, most of all, see the residents receiving excellent care and living in the luxury accommodation we offer.

Being part of the team from the beginning gives me great pleasure; I have been able to get to know our residents and their families, and show the pride and passion we aim to deliver to Leah Lodge at all times.

I have worked in varied roles within the care industry for the last five years. These range from working in the Support Office delivering general support to the homes when they were under pressure, completing payrolls, purchase ledger, sales and finance. Whist I enjoyed the variety of work, the best part for me was being out visiting the homes, helping the employees and mainly caring for the residents. That is what led me to work as an Administrator at Leah Lodge.

My working experiences include working in a care home environment, 4 & 5 star hotels and also leisure centre’s for the past 30 years’.

Myself and my highly-experienced team, are really enjoying making sure that very high standards are maintained, so that residents, visitors and staff have a clean, safe, welcoming environment to live in, visit and work.

In my spare time I enjoy reading and writing music, socialising with friends and family and walking my dog Edna.

The Importance Of Meal Times

We wouldn’t call our food restaurant standard because we aim for something more personal. At Cinnamon we believe in delicious, home-cooked food, attentive service and understanding what each resident enjoys. Every meal we serve has to be something we’d be proud to present to our nearest and dearest at a special family gathering.

Our restaurant menu evolves with the changing seasons and tastes of our residents who help to plan each meal by offering our chefs feedback and ideas. From the quality of the fresh, locally sourced ingredients and nutritional balance to the attractive presentation, we’re there to listen and make sure that each meal feels like something special, not an afterthought.

Relax and enjoy yourself in our sociable residents’ dining rooms or take an active part preparing food in our life skill kitchens. Enjoy a healthy snack in the comfort of your en-suite room. Catch up with guests or fellow residents over a tasty treat in our comfortable lounges and cheery cafés. And if you’re hungry later on, there’s always a selection of fruit, snacks and hot and cold drinks to enjoy.
