Meet The Manager

Colette Gardin is Home Manager at Acacia Lodge Care Home.

Situated adjacent to the A663 Broadway road and firmly established within the heart of the New Moston community, Acacia Lodge Care Home is five miles from Manchester city centre. Residents settle in quickly, with great support from families, who are very much a part of life at our retirement home. We have an open-door policy to friends and relatives, who can rest assured that their loved ones are in safe hands.

'Outstanding' Care Home in Manchester
The staff and residents at Acacia Lodge in Manchester are thrilled that the Care Quality Commission (CQC) has assessed Acacia Lodge as being an ‘Outstanding’ care home, something that only 3.7% of care homes achieve in the UK. This amazing rating reflects all the hard work that the care team at Acacia Lodge put in, to ensure our residents are superbly looked after and enjoy the best in care and healthy living. Earlier this year, Manchester City Council also declared Acacia Lodge to be a ‘Gold’ rated care home. The Acacia Lodge team strive to do their utmost to ensure the lives of their residents are celebrated in every way possible, to the best possible standard.

Why not get a taste of the home, offering some of the best respite care in Manchester – you or your loved one could get an understanding of what living at our Manchester care home could be like.

We work extremely closely with relatives of residents who are living with dementia. Our Memory Care Suite uses their life stories as a basis for our care and we are proud to have a specialist Music Therapy programme that is hugely popular with residents and families alike.

Our bedrooms are spacious, with plenty of room for personal mementoes, photos and keepsakes. Walk-in showers and flat-screen TVs come as standard, and our housekeeping staff keep everything gleaming. The Buttercup Café and enclosed rear garden are favourite spots for a bit of togetherness, though there are plenty of other spaces throughout the home where residents can socialise with others, or relax quietly. Couples and companions are warmly welcomed in our home where their well-being, comfort, and happiness are our top priority.

Autumna has invited care providers to evidence the infection control measures they are carrying out, above and beyond those laid out by the government, in order to keep residents, staff and visitors safe.

What we're doing to keep residents & visitors safe

We are confident that our care homes are now some of the very safest places to live and work.

All of our staff have been trained in additional and heightened cleansing protocols and hygiene regimes, and these are being supported by a leading sanitisation system as part of our comprehensive infection controls. Testing regimes will continue for staff, residents and visitors.

We have re-aligned the resident in-house services to meet social distance guidance from the Government, for areas such as lounges and dining rooms, and for visiting entertainers and hair dressers; we are working hard to restore these services within the ‘new normal’ circumstances as soon as we can, when lockdown rules allow.

Infection Control Initiatives in place
safe-tick Infection Control Training Our staff are trained to use measures which prevent and control infections.
safe-tick Sterilisation & Disinfection Devices We are using sterilisation and/or disinfection devices within our care setting.
safe-tick Virus Testing We are testing for viral infection when symptoms present within our care setting.

Avery Healthcare has invested in outdoor garden ‘visitor pods’

The pods, are a garden room specifically designed to facilitate safe face-to-face contact with relatives and visitors. Each pod contains a floor to ceiling partition screen and a hands-free intercom so that communication is clear and safe for use. They are fitted with internal electrics and two, low-surface temperature electric panel heaters – suitable for these winter months.

Connectivity for resident testing, monitoring & communications

Infection control and the safety of both residents and staff often requires quarantine measures and the isolation of care home residents. To test, monitor and allow residents to communicate with relatives, the prevalence of room-level connectivity within the home is becoming increasingly relevant.

Activities Are So Important

Our residential care home has earned a reputation across Manchester for its vibrancy, and our often energetic, musical approach to resident well-being, especially in the field of dementia therapy. This was recently picked up by The Guardian. Manchester Camerata Orchestra’s Music in Mind (MIM) projects, which included working at Acacia Lodge, was a great success and had some dramatic results in awakening communication and now has a follow-on programme in the home.

Local community organisations, faith groups and schools are regular visitors to Acacia Lodge and our Activity Coordinators make sure there is always something interesting going on. We have plenty of trips out in the wider Manchester and Oldham communities and often enjoy a lunch in a pub or café.

Family and friends can keep in touch with what is going on in the home through our Facebook pages, which are always kept up to date. We also make use of Skype to connect with loved ones who cannot visit so often. Technology is an important facilitator for us.
