Meet The Manager

Karen Allen is General Manager at Melbourn Springs Care Home.

Hello, my name is Karen and I am the General Manager here at Melbourn Springs.

My journey in the care of frail older people started in 1982 and I feel very fortunate to have had an exceptionally varied career over the last 37 years. This has included managing assisted living facilities, day care centres, residential/nursing and dementia care homes.

As an experienced home manager, I fully understand how difficult the transition into new surroundings can be. My highly qualified team and myself are committed to fully support you and your family throughout this journey and always.

I am passionate about our residents being safe, making them happy, enabling them to lead fully enriched lives whilst always receiving the highest quality of care.

Our new premium care home will be opening in Melbourn, near Royston, in early 2020 and will offer residential, respite and dementia care to older individuals.

Our dedicated staff members will provide high quality residential care for frail older people who would benefit from additional care and support in a warm and friendly environment.

Our Memory Lane community will incorporate person-centred design in its use of colour and cues to help individuals navigate through the home, whilst thoughtful interior design features, such us adapted crockery and tableware, will assist with reminiscence. Communities will be broken up into small units with a family feel so people can feel safe and comfortable. Care will be focused on independence, dignity and choice, with a person-centred approach. Staffing levels will reflect the needs of residents, and people living with dementia will be offered a range of activities to help preserve life skills, support interactions and retain a sense of purpose and selfhood.

The village of Melbourn is steeped in history and has some of the most beautiful thatched cottages in the country, and the springs at Melbourn Bury, along with the peaceful River Mel, have also made it very popular with locals and visitors alike.

The Melbourn Community Hub has been a great addition to the village, which comprises Bookmark Café, the library, parish council offices and it is also a venue for many community activities and events. There are many clubs and societies that meet regularly, in addition to the village’s Mobile Warden Scheme, ensuring that no one is left isolated. The village is renowned for a strong rural, community spirit that continues to thrive, and which Melbourn Springs Care Home will very much be a part

Home Services Advisor

Hello, my name is Dan, your Home Services Advisor at Melbourn Springs.

Nursing has always played a huge part in my family life and through these experiences with elderly relatives I can fully empathize with the difficult decisions that we can all face as our loved ones grow older and their needs change. Understandably, this can be an extremely challenging time for all involved as our nearest and dearest become more vulnerable, often requiring extra care and support in their daily lives.

As the Home Services Advisor at Melbourn Springs I am here to support, offer advice and answer any questions that you may have to help make the transition into your new Barchester home less daunting and as easy as possible.

The Importance Of Meal Times

Our menus will be composed of only the best fresh produce and cooked to the highest quality, with aims for the natural aroma and taste to be retained as best as possible. A great deal of care is taken to accommodate all dietary requirements, and our meals are always prepared with the likes and dislikes of residents taken into consideration.

Dietary requirements

For residents that have difficulties in swallowing we modify the menu of the day so that is it a soft, palatable dish.  To support our chefs in producing these dishes, our hospitality and Chef Academy organises theory and practical workshops.  Working in partnership with Nutricia, our practical workshops involve all chefs and deputy managers learning about dysphagia and producing these modified menus. The chefs work with the chef trainer to prepare fork mashable and thick puree meals to the correct consistency, taste and presentation.  The deputy managers can then ensure all modified menus served are presented correctly for our residents.

Activities Are So Important

Ensuring that our social events offer fun and adventure will be a major focus of the ethos of our home; it’s important that those we support can enjoy an active and social lifestyle. Of course, there will always be those who prefer peace and quiet, and in these instances, a cup of tea and a chat will always be welcomed.
