Meet The Manager

David Garland is General Manager at Kirkburn Court Care Home.

I have worked in the Care Sector for the past 30 years, in a varied range of positions. I started as a Care Assistant in 1986 and have been involved in management of care home services the past 9 years. I joined Barchester Healthcare, here at Kirkburn Court, in June 2015 and the warm welcome from the residents, their families and staff have helped me settle very well into life here as General Manager. I enjoy ensuring that residents and staff are well supported within the daily life of the home.

David Garland

Kirkburn Court is a purpose-built, single storey home providing care and support and 24-hour nursing care for frail older people and to people living with dementia, who are supported in a dedicated Memory Lane Community.

The home is set in its own gardens in Peterhead. The aim of the home is to ‘provide the highest possible standard of care within the home. Residents’ individuality, dignity, privacy and independence are not compromised because they are elderly, confused or disabled. Our aim is to give our residents the best possible quality of life.’

The best way to decide about a care home is to visit it and make up your mind for yourself. We welcome visitors and will be happy to show you around – or to answer any questions we can help with.

Claire Burden
Activities Coordinator

I began my career with Barchester in December 2017. Having worked within the teaching profession for the preceding 8 years, I feel that I bring a range of transferable skills to the activities team.

I strongly believe that the provision of activities is about so much more than just structured, planned events – capturing and celebrating the little moments in daily life, such as enjoying a chat and a cup of tea together, are equally as important.

Activities, no matter how big or small, should be at the heart of every home and that individuality should be celebrated. In addition, I feel that activities should take a person-centred approach, which is why I enjoy spending time with the residents and learning about their preferences and their history.

Administrator

I started at Kirkburn Court in 1997 as receptionist and after 5 years applied for the Administrator's position and then worked here as an Administrator for 10 years. I then applied for Regional Support Administrator and carried out this role for a further 4 years before returning to Kirkburn Court as the Administrator. I really enjoy spending time with my family and baking with my granddaughter.

The Importance Of Meal Times

Our chefs always use fresh ingredients to prepare delicious, nutritionally balanced meals throughout the day and night. Our traditional fish and chips and mince & tatties are always a favourite with those we support.

For residents that have difficulties in swallowing we modify the menu of the day so that is it a soft, palatable dish.  To support our chefs in producing these dishes, our hospitality and Chef Academy organises theory and practical workshops.  Working in partnership with Nutricia, our practical workshops involve all chefs and deputy managers learning about dysphagia and producing these modified menus. The chefs work with the chef trainer to prepare fork mashable and thick puree meals to the correct consistency, taste and presentation.  The deputy managers can then ensure all modified menus served are presented correctly for our residents.

Activities Are So Important

Here at Kirkburn Court, we aim to facilitate a personalised programme of meaningful activities, which are designed to promote independence, social stimulation and cognitive function. We strive to create a comfortable and safe environment where fun, creativity and individuality are encouraged. We feel it is important for us and residents to place value on yesterday, today and tomorrow – which is why we invest heavily in getting to know residents and learning their life history.

Our inclusive, yet respectful ethos is reflected in the wide range of activities we offer – ranging from larger structured group activities to one-to-one sessions. Our monthly activity programmes are extremely varied, but some of the activities you may expect to find include concerts, crafts, games, exercise sessions, reminiscing and outings. We also have a strong relationship with the local community and often invite external guests into the home, including performers, schools, and choirs.
