Meet The Manager

Christine Devlin is Home manager at Connors House.

"I have been working in the care sector for about 25 years, prior to that I worked in the nursing sector.

"I have been with the organisation for almost 20 years but there has never been a dull moment, after a brief spell as a carer, I became a senior and NVQ assessor, then a deputy, then a care coordinator until about eight years ago when I was promoted to home manager.

"The different roles have kept it very interesting, all of the roles have been and are challenging at times but mostly rewarding."

Christine Devlin

Nestled just a stone’s throw from the historic City Centre of Canterbury, Connors House provides a warm and welcoming environment for older people looking for a home from home.

Our bright and airy conservatory leads to a spacious garden, with plenty of areas to relax and enjoy the flowers. The home also has a modern courtyard, with a built-in barbecue and fish pond, as well as a slip resistant rubber floor for safety. The courtyard is filled with sensory plants and covered with a grape pergola, making it a stunning place to spend the warmer months. Residents can also make use of a purpose-built activity room and cosy seating areas.

Connors House is split into three wings, supporting residents with lower support needs through to those who have advanced dementia and require 24-hour assistance.

We are a pet friendly organisation and Connors House is home to two birds, a cat and a dog. We invite you to pop in for a cup of tea to meet our friendly staff (many of whom have been with us a very long time!) and residents and of course, our pets.

Description

Connors House has three distinct units with an overall capacity for 47 residents. Whilst the actual level of personal care each resident receives will depend on their individual needs, our usual staffing levels at Connors House, assuming that each room is occupied, during the day are: one experienced senior care staff who has achieved their level 3 award in Health and Social Care and six to seven care assistants, who have either achieved their level 2 in Health and Social Care or who have, or are working to achieve, a Care Certificate. During the night there is one night lead carer and three care assistants working on the floor, plus one manager on call.

Residents can choose whether to have a male or female carer for their personal care needs and where possible we will accommodate their wishes, however there may be times when a male carer is not available. In this case we will always ensure we let the resident know well in advance of their care being provided.

The home also has a dedicated social activities facilitator who organises internal and external activities for our residents to enjoy. In addition, we have a home manager and a deputy manager who, together with the home administrator, comprise the home’s management team.

The Importance Of Meal Times

Feedback from our residents has told us that food is very important to them, which is why we are committed to providing nutritious homemade food that is seasonal and to our residents’ taste.

In the morning, residents can enjoy a traditional or continental breakfast, comprising cereals, toast and a Full English. There are two choices at lunch, options vary but can include curries, casseroles and roasts. A range of desserts are also available at lunch, including puddings, pies and tarts. For the evening meal, there is a choice of savouries, such as scones, sandwiches, soups and salads as well as a variety of desserts. Snacks and drinks are available throughout the day and night.

We also like to incorporate food into our activities, regularly holding tea parties, themed restaurant evenings and barbecues in the summer.

Our catering staff are well-trained and can cater for a diverse range of dietary requirements, contact the home to discuss your needs and we will do all we can to help.

Connors House has recently been awarded 5 stars, the highest possible rating, from the Food Standards Agency.

Activities Are So Important

What you want to do with your day is your choice at Connors House. Our activity coordinator supports residents to create and implement a stimulating calendar of activities and outings that offers something for everyone.

You could spend the morning baking homemade biscuits, potting plants, or perhaps you’d prefer to join a creative music session. During the summer, alfresco tea parties and barbecues are on the cards, as well as outings to nearby places of interest.

An established residential care home for many years, Connors House has developed some excellent relationships with the local community, in particular, students of the nearby universities.

The activity coordinator also supports residents during one to one time, as well as encouraging them to continue their own hobbies. Some residents also like to help out around the home, which they are more than welcome to do as this is their home.

A historic cathedral city and UNESCO World Heritage Site, Canterbury City Centre is just a 15-minute walk from Connors House, with regular buses and taxi facilities available.

Canterbury has plenty of amenities and attractions for residents and visitors alike. These include Canterbury Cathedral, seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury, St Augustine’s Abbey, St Martin’s Church and a variety of museums. There is also an excellent range of leisure facilities, cinemas, bars, cafes and plenty of shops.

The city centre has good transport links to nearby towns, such as Ashford and Dover. Whitstable, Herne Bay and Margate are also nearby, making summer day trips to the beach easy. A high-speed train service also operates from Canterbury, enabling travel to central London within an hour.
