Meet The Manager

Gemma Wallbanks is Home Manager at Alder House Care Home.

Alder House is a Nottingham care home based in Nuthall and quite an exceptional place, even if we say so ourselves! It’s noticeable as soon as you cross the threshold and meet the residents and staff. The sense of togetherness is so apparent that you cant help but notice it, it is something we have worked hard to cultivate and are really proud of.

The home is just off the A610 Nottingham Road in Nuthall, adjoining one of the entrances to Broxtowe County Park and a three-minute walk from the Phoenix tram stop for trams into Nottingham. Our residential, dementia and respite care for residents is of the highest quality and focused on enhancing each and every resident’s well-being. We have fun and you will find that settling in happens quicker than you might expect. Companionship abounds at our Nottingham care home and the support helps everyone get along just fine.

Autumna has invited care providers to evidence the infection control measures they are carrying out, above and beyond those laid out by the government, in order to keep residents, staff and visitors safe.

What we're doing to keep residents & visitors safe

We are confident that our care homes are now some of the very safest places to live and work.

All of our staff have been trained in additional and heightened cleansing protocols and hygiene regimes, and these are being supported by a leading sanitisation system as part of our comprehensive infection controls. Testing regimes will continue for staff, residents and visitors.

We have re-aligned the resident in-house services to meet social distance guidance from the Government, for areas such as lounges and dining rooms, and for visiting entertainers and hair dressers; we are working hard to restore these services within the ‘new normal’ circumstances as soon as we can, when lockdown rules allow.

Infection Control Initiatives in place
safe-tick Infection Control Training Our staff are trained to use measures which prevent and control infections.
safe-tick Sterilisation & Disinfection Devices We are using sterilisation and/or disinfection devices within our care setting.

Avery Healthcare has invested in outdoor garden ‘visitor pods’

The pods, are a garden room specifically designed to facilitate safe face-to-face contact with relatives and visitors. Each pod contains a floor to ceiling partition screen and a hands-free intercom so that communication is clear and safe for use. They are fitted with internal electrics and two, low-surface temperature electric panel heaters – suitable for these winter months.

Connectivity for resident testing, monitoring & communications

Infection control and the safety of both residents and staff often requires quarantine measures and the isolation of care home residents. To test, monitor and allow residents to communicate with relatives, the prevalence of room-level connectivity within the home is becoming increasingly relevant.

The Importance Of Meal Times

We like to keep up our standards! We get the best china out for special occasions and the chef and team don’t disappoint with what goes with it. The same is true for all mealtimes in fact, as we have food that is freshly prepared each day on the premises and carefully considered for its nutritional content. A choice of menus is available and all dietary requirements are catered for. We’re good at tempting poor appetites too.

Meal times are an important part of life at Alder House and greatly anticipated by the residents. We never forget that and you can often find chef chatting to residents about their likes and dislikes and what can be improved. Mealtimes are when we all come together and socialise, perhaps with the aid of a glass of wine, which is always served with meals. Some of our residents even meet beforehand for an aperitif – in the garden if it’s nice. Why don’t you come and join them? Guests are always welcome!

Activities Are So Important

And that’s because we make it so. We are very proud of our extensive and secluded gardens and love to be out there. Here is a list of what we do, not the gardener:

  • Sweep the paths
  • Fill up the bird feeders
  • Water the plants
  • Watch the birds
  • Decide if the lettuces are ready for a salad lunch
  • Chat to the chickens – any eggs today?
  • Stroke a bunny (not one that munches our lettuces)
  • And of course have a nice cup of tea

So you can see that there is plenty going on. The same is true of what happens inside the building. There’s a lot you can do in a chair besides watching the telly: ‘Oomph’ exercises, playing football, balloon tennis or dominoes with your granddaughter, for instance. Life within our residential care home is always stimulating and varied. We recognise the importance of preventing falls and so have a specially designed programme of regular core strength exercises. Our lead Recreation Activity Coordinator has been recognised nationally for her high-octane activities and sheer personality.

Alder House is alive with chatter, and guests often comment on the companionship that life here offers. Staff, residents and guests all mingle freely, while our popular Film Club enjoys daily viewings in our cinema: old movie classics are hugely popular. For others, it is our Sunday Pub Club for which nothing is better than a pie and a pint.

We get out a lot too in our own minibus.
