Meet The Manager

James Fox is Registered Manager at Kingswood Manor.

My name is Jim, I grew up in West Belfast. I trained as a nurse in Northern Ireland.

I have worked in a variety of specialist settings across the NHS and private healthcare companies.

I joined the Harbour family in 2015 and have worked in three of their homes so far.

Care home management is a demanding but ultimately deeply fulfilling role in our community.

Each day brings new challenges and precious moments with our residents.

Finding a balance is difficult, however with the support of my family, we use our time together to try to make each moment count.

Personally, I feel life is fleeting and we should always strive to find new experiences.

I enjoy reading, walking, judo, music, language, cycling, gardening, travel, cooking and studying new subjects.

Josh Olsen

Kitchen Manager

Hi, my name is Josh.

I am the Kitchen Manager at Kingswood Manor and Kingswood Mount Care Homes in South Liverpool. I am a Big Liverpool fan and have travelled all over Europe following the reds!

My passion for cooking started when I was about 6-7 when I used to help my mum prepare family meals. Upon leaving school I attended catering college where I gained my qualification (NVQ level 3 in professional cookery) from there I worked at many restaurants and hotels. (from Kitchen Porter to Head Chef).

After my grandad passed away with advanced dementia, I decided I wanted a change my career slightly and give something back and that is why I decided to come to work at Kingswood. I have worked for Harbour since June 2019 and I enjoy working for the company.

My ambition in life is to own a family run bistro, where I can have all my family and friends working with me to make it the best it can be, No passion, no point!!’

Kathy Walkden
Kathy Walkden
Clinical Lead

I completed my ENG training at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital.

In 1990 I completed my conversion to RGN.

In 2000 I went to work for Liverpool Community Health as a Nurse Practitioner. I was promoted to Senior Nurse Practitioner and gained my Clinical Skills award and Diagnostics award with John Moores University.

I left the NHS and worked in various roles in care homes.

I then worked for the DWP but left as I missed looking after people. I have worked at Kingswood Mount and Manor in several roles and have now gained the position of Clinical Lead on days at Kingswood Manor.

I thoroughly enjoy my job, I love looking after older people.

My other responsibilities are co-parenting my 2 grandchildren aged 5 and 10 months which I love. I enjoy knitting and making bunting and any arts and crafts in my spare time.

Layla Bennett
Layla Bennett
Assistant Manager

I‘m Layla, Assistant Manager at Kingswood Manor & Mount. I enjoy my role, working with the team, providing the best possible care for our residents.

At 18 I worked as a care assistant whilst studying in college. I provided 1 to 1 care for a gentleman with Alzheimer’s Disease. I later gained an honour’s degree in Psychology. My experience working with older adults and people living with dementia led me to study Mental Health Nursing. I also gained experience from my positions as a Nurse, Deputy, and Registered Manager in various care homes. I am very fond of working with the older population and value the experiences and wisdom which they impart.

I have had family members living in care homes and believe this provided me with insight into what is important to families of the people in our care.

When not working, I enjoy spending time with my partner and our two cats, as well as our family and friends. I love reading, hiking holidays and music festivals.

Tommy Smith

I worked across a number of Services including low and medium Secure Units for people with a Learning Disability. I became a Director of Specialist Services in 2010 and was responsible for opening up Centres that delivered a Rehabilitation and Step Down Service  to people who had experienced an Acquired Brain Injury.

In 2015 wanting more family time, I left my Senior Management role and joined the Kingswood Manor family, where I have been able to deliver person centred care to our Residents. I have a passion and commitment in wanting to create a caring and supportive environment capable of delivering  positive outcomes to the Residents that live there.

At home I am a family man who enjoys spending time with my wife and daughter while supporting my local football time and walking my dog.

Activities Are So Important

Pre- COVID

The life of the home varies according to the daily activity programme, devised with the collaboration of residents and a VERY imaginative and enthusiastic activity coordinator. Our residents are often entertained by ‘Elvis’ in the lounge, ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ with competitors that have included HRH The Queen and Prince Philip and for a very good cause, staff wrestling in inflated sumo suits in the garden cheered on by an enthusiastic crowd of residents! There is always lots of fun and laughter in this home.

Special mention must be made of the ‘Community Partnership Award ‘given by Educate 2016 to Kingswood Manor and Springwood Heath Primary School for their collaboration project which still continues today.  Children from the school come to read to residents and also come and talk, sing and spend time getting to know each other. Residents absolutely love these weekly visits and both generations really make the most of their time together.

During COVID

Activities since lock down have taken a slightly different path with not having the 3 schools visiting or us visiting them. No trips out as every week we would always go to a Social Club for entertainment and lunch, entertainers haven’t been in nor our furry friends but each day we all still enjoy each others company and have fun from games such as Bingo, Carpet Bowls, Floor Dominoes and ‘Name That Tune’ and a fun General Knowledge Quiz every week. Every Friday we get the 12 ft screen out and with the projector we watch a film, open the bar up, and enjoy watching a nominated movie.
When it’s sunny and warm we all go and enjoy a picnic in the garden, listen to music, have a natter and a sing a long.
We have celebrated some wonderful birthdays and themed days such as 75th anniversary of VE Day. Plus our Blind Date every Valentines Day. Next month we are having ‘Oh I do like to be beside the seaside’ party with inflatable seagulls, fun hats and sun glasses, fishing nets and fish coloured in and posted from residents families, adapted beach games and of course an ice cream
Phone calls and face time to families keeping them in touch during lockdown has been a huge priority as well as window visits and letters and parcels and emails read too.
Visiting residents in their rooms and having group chats in the lounge and a little keep fit chair exercises all form, with the previously mentioned, the basis of our Kingswood Manor activity programme.
