Our Building and Facilities

Our home is set across three floors, and there are two communal lounges and dining rooms on each floor, as well as a quiet lounge, conservatory and ample outdoor space, meaning peace and tranquillity is never far away. Our beautiful bedrooms are all furnished with your comfort in mind. Across our three floors we have two communal lounges, dining rooms, a quiet lounge and a conservatory . We also have a wonderful landscaped garden, which can be viewed and accessed from many of the bedrooms as well as a patio which is perfect for fresh air and outdoor activities.

Relax, socialise, get involved

Whether you’re entertaining your family and friends, spending time with other residents or taking part in activities, our living rooms are ideal. It’s always up to you whether you want to get involved with activities – you’re more than welcome to sit back, relax and enjoy the atmosphere.

There are two large communal lounges – one in each unit – and a quiet lounge and conservatory for residents to enjoy.

Making friends

Our communal lounge spaces are very popular with the residents and they’re where a lot of the socialising in the home takes place, as well as in the dining rooms. And our activities often get residents talking about their lives and experiences in a fun, relaxed setting.

How can residents spend private time with their relatives?

With so many different communal spaces, it’s not hard to find some peace and quiet at Houndswood House. You’re also free to use any of the home or gardens, or your own room, to meet with your visitors. If you’re celebrating a special occasion, you can reserve an area to entertain your guests.

Are residents free to come and go around the home as they please?

Of course. This is your home and all the communal areas are here for you to enjoy. If you’d rather spend the day in your room, that’s your choice too.

Admire the outdoors

Houndswood House is surrounded by a lovely garden, ideal for a relaxing stroll or sitting out in the sunshine. We also have raised beds which some of our residents enjoy tending to.

There is also a patio with outdoor seating where we regularly serve afternoon tea, and meals when the weather is fine. In the summer we hold many activities outdoors, including garden parties and barbeques.

Can residents do their own gardening?

While many of our residents are happy to sit back and enjoy the garden and the wildlife, some of our more green-fingered residents love to get stuck in. We encourage them to plant flowers and vegetables for all the residents and staff to enjoy. And our raised beds mean that wheelchair users are also able to join in with the gardening.

Nursing care is for residents with more complex healthcare needs, and who require the supervision of fully qualified nurses. This might involve frequent medication regimes, wound care, constant assessment, monitoring and care planning.

Our registered nurses are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and specialise in providing therapeutic care for our nursing home residents. They are supported by our highly skilled CHAPS qualified carers, who assist with all aspects of personal care and support.

At Houndswood House Care Home in Radlett near St Albans every day is sprinkled with Magic Moments whether you are staying with us for a short break or living with us permanently.
One day our residents might be out and about visiting local sights, the next, taking part in our exercise classes or alternatively they may just choose the garden as their happy place.

Short stay 'residential care' breaks are now available to help you get back on your feet or to give your family or carer a period of respite. Unlike many other care providers, we can offer you the option of booking in advance. For more details about how far in advance and our availability, please get in touch.

We currently offer short stay and respite care for individuals with residential care needs - please get in touch to find out more.

We believe that real care cannot be delivered until we completely understand the person being cared for. We will work together to create a lifestyle that suits you; that aims to make you happy and keep you healthy. These are our ultimate goals, and we have four principles that help us achieve them. They sit at the heart of everything we do and will inspire the way we look after you or your loved one.

The four principles of brighterkind care:

We implement a personalised care plan so you can get on with having fun and being you.

We encourage you to do the things you enjoy and live every day as you wish.

We embrace your opinions and ideas, and will involve you in every decision about your care.

We foster a strong social bond between residents, staff and the wider community.

The Importance Of Meal Times

At Houndswood House, we love our food

We firmly believe that when you eat well, you live well too. This is a core part of our brighterkind philosophy of care, centering on good nutrition and the importance of mealtimes as a social occasion.

Our dining rooms are always set to restaurant standards, so residents need worry about nothing but enjoying the food.

Each day our chef prepares restaurant-style meals combining variety with a balanced diet and an emphasis on locally sourced ingredients. Our residents get involved in helping to plan our menus, too.

The dining rooms always become hubs of conversation and laughter, giving even our more frail residents a chance to come together and socialise. We always serve a roast on a Sunday with all the trimmings, and have regular buffets to mark special occasions such as pie and mash for Londoners’ Day. No matter the occasion, we always encourage our residents to make the most of living in an active and friendly environment.

Of course, when, where and who you eat with is entirely up to you. Friends and family can join you as often as you’d like (at a small charge), and our extras menu gives you the option to order snacks at any time of the day.

Special requirements

If you have any special dietary requirements or preferences, please let us know on arrival. We are happy to cater to your needs and wishes, however complex.

Is alcohol served with meals?

Alcohol is always served for special occasions. A number of residents have their own alcoholic beverages that they can enjoy at their leisure.

What provisions are made for residents’ birthdays?

We always try to celebrate residents’ birthdays, if they want to. A cake is always made especially. If relatives would like to reserve an area for a special birthday event, just let us know and this can be arranged.

Activities Are So Important

At brighterkind we believe in living life to the full. That’s why we’re passionate about creating vibrant, stimulating activities that will help our residents to love every day. We call them: ‘Magic Moments’.

Every brighterkind home now has a Magic Moments Club which provides a vast range of activities and fun things to do that are open to all of our residents.

The idea behind Magic Moments is that just because someone moves into a care home doesn't mean that the things they love doing should suddenly stop – quite the contrary, we believe our residents should have the opportunity to love every day, by doing the things that they have always loved as well as trying new things along the way.

Magic moments are unique to each individual and so it is important that the Magic Moments programme reflects this, tailoring activities to meet each resident’s individual needs in the best possible way, whilst at the same time enjoying the company of others.

Our Magic Moments Club Co-ordinators, get to know our residents really well and will seek to provide an ever-changing programme of events and activities tailored to the needs of our residents and aimed at improving their wellbeing in terms of their mind, body and soul.

The Magic Moments Club team run a ‘Welcome to the Week Meeting’ for our Residents and families so that everyone knows what is coming up and can start looking forward to their favourite Magic Moments!

Our daily and weekly Magic Moments Club programmes are posted on our notice boards and residents and their families can take part as they wish. We also run monthly Magic Moments Club themed events where we encourage families and our local community to take part.

The Magic Moments Club focuses on our residents’ interests, so each day it's a hive of different activities – ranging from art, gardening and baking, to dancing, puzzles and movie nights.

We use digital technology for on-screen quizzes, news and entertainment, and our team has also created an exclusive MAGIC MOMENTS CLUB APP. This innovation puts all the possibilities of social media, events, happenings, video calls, digital content and special personalised areas into the hands of our residents. We also take the magic outdoors, encouraging our residents to get out and about with trips to theatres, pubs, galleries, gardens and local events. A steady stream of interesting people also come into our homes, from local artists and musicians to animal therapists and beauticians.

Did you know that in a recent survey 60% of people said that they had never had a wish come true? At brighterkind we want to put this right with our Wishing Wells programme, just like 99 year old Muriel in the photo below, who's wish was granted to fly Up, Up and Away, in a hot air balloon!

Our programme encourages all-round wellbeing. The activities focus on keeping the mind sharp and agile, the body fit and mobile, and the spirit lively and engaged through entertainment, challenges, discoveries and personal interests.

As well as introducing an even greater focus on nature and fresh air activities we are also focusing on relaxation and music. Just one of these exciting developments is the creation of a choir or singing group in every home.

Taking advantage of sunny days and getting out into the fresh air is so important and we aim to make regular use of our gardens and outside spaces, and includes a range of trips and excursions. Getting close to nature by doing a little gardening or bird watching can really lift the spirits, so we’re working with local organisations and communities to make even more of activities in our gardens.

We also offer trips out, although it’s not always about going far afield. Many of our residents want to visit local attractions or to pop to the shops. We do our very best to make sure these interests and wishes are fulfilled. Click here to see examples of brighterkind TRIPS OUT.
